Re: SBS Backup fails

Hello Andrija,

Thank you for posting back!

I understand that your concern is, your hardware supports Hardware
compression, but you found the hardware compression function is grayed out
in NTBackup. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

For your best convenience, I suggest that we run the command line to enable
the Hardware Compression to see how it goes:

For example:

This command line is for your reference:

%windir%\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@%sbsprogramdir%\Backup\Small
Business Backup Script.bks" /d "Small Business Server Backup created on
%date% at %time%" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /j "Small Business
Server Backup Job" /l:s /p "%Tape library pool%" /UM

hc:on means the hardware compression is enabled. hc:off means the hardware
compression is disabled.

For more detail information, please see:

814583 How to use command line parameters with the Ntbackup command in
Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;814583

After we perform the steps above, we can disable the hardware compression
by running the command line, and compare these two backups.

Please note the compression rate varies with file types. For example, JPG,
MP3, ZIP files are already compressed and there will probably be no
compression during backup. In certain circumstances, the second compression
will actually INCREASE the file size.

Please take your time to perform the steps. if you have any updates, please
feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Thank you,

But, I've written that the built in solution in the ntbackup (enabling
the hartdware compression) did not work. It seams that for the
mentioned drive compression is not enabled. I pressume that it has to
be enabled through the proprietary drivers or something similar.
In any case, thank you for the help.

Cheers,
Andrija.
