Re: Urgent! New router and big disaster

OK, yes, I've struck a router which would only allow DHCP clients access to
the internet. (forget which one, what manufacturer/model is yours?)

SO, _FOR NOW_ set the 'external' interface of SBS to get IP by DHCP, but
manually set the DNS server to the 'internal' IP (this is all in the
external NIC properties). If the router allows DHCP reservations based on
the MAC address of the NIC, set one. (I have this funny feeling the one I
was dealing with did not allow this, hence it was thrown in the bin and an
alternate device found)

OK, I got involved.

Nope, Sorry
did all that and no go... no internet connection from the server. the only
way for the internet to work on the server is to have the dhcp services
running on the router. And I dod have it for both internal internet access
and it also supplies internet to a rental/ conference room. This is hard
because I also have a static ip from the ISP to put somewhere, and have it
on
the router.

here is the ipconfig after i made the changes
From Server

ipconfig /release

so that didn't work. I have tried to use the change server ip wizard, but
either i'm missing a step or it don't work.

which is why I'm staying out of it.

I would have left DHCP on the router on, for the possibility of
'external'
users getting a connection easily.
I probably would have run the 'Change Server IP address' wiz by now.
Maybe
twice.
Then the CEICW.

We can start by correcting the nic configuration on the server.

O I wish.... Anyway, here is the info...

From Server
Host name:me-ser-1
primary dns suffix: muellerelectric.local
node type : unknowen
ip routing enabled: yes
win proxy enabled; yes
dns suffix search list: MuellerElectrical.local

The following nic is the one connected to your router, right? Make
sure
of that by unplugging the cat cable an noting which nic becomes
disconnected.

Ethernet adapter network connections
connection Specific dns suffix:
Decsription: broadcom Netextream gigabit ethernet
Physcial address: 00-10-18-18-31-C2
DHCP Enabled: yes
Autoconfig Enabled : yes

Change to DHCP enabled: no

ip address 192.168.0.100
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
default gatway:192.168.0.1
dhcp server:192.168.0.1

You won't need the DHCP server entry, as you are doing manual
configuration.

dns server: 192.168.0.1

Change the DNS server IP to the IP of the other nic - 192.168.1.103

Ethernet adapter Server local area connection:
Connection specific DNS Suffix:
description: intel pro/1000 my network connection
physical address :00-14-22-B4-12-Ce
dhcp enabled : no
ip address 192.168.1.103
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
default gateway:
dns server 192.168.1.103
primary wins server 192.168.1.103

Now, run the Connect to the Internet Wizard. If UPnP is offered,
decline it. If you know your ISPs DNS server IP(s), you can enter
them
in the wizard - if you don't know them then leave them blank. If the
CEICW reports any errors, then post them here. If not, then go to a
workstation and from a command prompt - enter ipconfig /release
<enter>
and then ipconfig /renew <enter>, and then ipconfig /all - and post
the
results here. May as well do an ipconfig at the server as well.

In Server Management | Advanced Management | Computer Management |
Services and Applications | DHCP | Scope <ipaddress>, what is the ip
address scope shown in <ipaddress>?

Move down and click on Scope Options - what is shown there?

Client Station

Host name : Station-2

I'm going on 3 hours sleep and probably getting quite stupid,
I'll
post
the
IP Configs for all in the morning- I gotta get to bed.
Thanks for the quick replys

Don't panic.

Log onto the server desktop, and from a command prompt - run
ipconfig\all
and post the results here. Then get some sleep.

Once the configuration as it is now is known, then it won't be
too
hard
to
get it going again. Folks will be getting up in 5 or 6 hours
and
will be
able to help you. (I'm off to bed now) ;-).

quick brief on orginal setup
Dell Power 1800 server running SBS2003 standard with 2 nics
1 D-link 8 port router & 1- 24 port switch
D-link connected to ISP with a stactic ip and server- onbard
nic
connected
to switch.
Orginal install went off with out a hitch including all
updates
ect.
For
a
week clients could communicate with server.

Yesterday the router dies, and I quickly swapted it with
another
D-link
router this one smaller -only a four port. When the router
died, other
than
no internet access, the client machines could still connect
to
server.
After I swaped the router everything was still fine.

This morning, I had to go clean up my network room and
wires.
During
this
I
shut down the server, and removed of from the room. It was
down
for
about
5
hours.
Then I set it back up, all the same- i didn't touch a
setting,
and now
my
clients can't login. The administrator can log in client
machines,
release/renew the ip address, look at network places, see
the
server
but
cant
connect. No internet access either.

Okay so back at the server -no internet connection but can
see
the
internal
website. The external nic is set to auto get ip from router,
but the
primary
dns is the ip address of the local nic. When I change that
to
the ip
of
the
router I can get internet on the server. Ran the CEICW...
doh!
The
wizard
poped up with that the router is a plug in play and it
wanted
to
configure
it. Now everything is so totally messed.
I cant get any clients to log in but when i set the ip on
the
external
nic
back to the router ip, I can reach the remote server login
page
on my
laptop.
I have ran the change server ip wizard, but nothing.

Please I need to have this whole thing back up and running
by
Mon.
morning,
so please give very deatiled instructions if ya got them. I
have been
going
on less than 3 hours sleep, and if you can come up with a
less
than
perfect
quick fix until next weekend, I am all ears.

Thanks
__
Forgot to mention that the laptop can be pluggd in the
switchbox, not
have
acces to internet but still can connect to remote server
login
page.
The ip address was changed and now is 192.168.0.103 for the
internal
nic.
The DHCP shows that ip address in the address pool
