Re: Changing Network Config post SBS 2003

Yes, something is wrong. Router placement!

#5 should NOT be a router. It should be a switch.

#3 would most likely be a router with a built-in firewall and several ports.

You should not build the server on the LAN on which it will finally reside,
unless you are ready to change over immediately. You can do this by
temporarily adding another router into the system with the SBS connected to
that router on its WAN NIC.

This will be your temp config while you build SBS:
1. Internet
2. ISP Connection
3. Router with firewall and two or more ports
4A. One port of step #3 router to a second router with SBS on it (dual NICs,
router to WAN side, LAN not connected yet, or to a second switch for testing
with one workstation)
4B. One port of step #3 router to a switch
5. Clients

This will be your final config once everything is on SBS:
1. Internet
2. ISP Connection
3. Router with firewall
4. SBS Server (dual NICs: router to WAN side, LAN side to switch)
5. Switch
6. Clients

I am planning to set-up SBS 2003. I know the preferred network config is:

1. Internet
2. ISP Connection
3. Hardware Firewall
4. SBS Server
5. Router
6. Clients

However, I am uncomforable with rolling out this config immediately
because
it leaves my client computers (currently peer-to-peer) totally dependent
on
SBS working. I am thinking of installing SBS on the server, and slowly
migrating each computer in the peer-to-peer to SBS.

Obviously, my thought is that this approach would mitigate the risk that
none of the computers work. Business continuity planning!

Anything wrong with this approach?
