RE: Sending mail via RPC over HTTP

Hi Robert,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.

From your description, I understand that you have encountered some issues:

1. You can not send email to the Exchange server via RPC over http.
2. From OWA, you can not saw the Contact list and send email to it.
3. You can not access the RWW site properly.

If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Since Microsoft engineers can only focus on one issue per thread, let us
first focus on the RPC over http issue so that we can resolve issues
efficiently one by one. We recommend you post different incidents in
different threads to keep the thread clean. In doing so, it will ensure
your issues are resolved in a timely manner. Thanks for your understanding.

Before we go further to trouble shoot the RPC over http issue, please
kindly help me collect some information to isolate the issue:

1. What is your meaning of "can not send mail from the outlook client to
the server"? What is the exact error message you received when trying to
send email?
2. Where these affected emails stay? Do they show in Outbox folder, Sent
items box or others?
3. Can you send emails to external email addresses? Can you send emails to
the domain users?

I would like to suggest that you follow below steps to re-configure the RPC
over HTTPs:

I. When you run CEICW (server management console -> Configure E-mail and
Internet configuration wizard -> Connect to the internet), you need enable
firewall and then the Services Configuration page and the Web Services
Configuration page will appear later. In these pages, you can configure
firewall to open related ports to allow specific traffic transfer and
publish some web services to internet. Additionally, if your hardware
router supports UPnP, this wizard will automatically help you open related
ports.

I would like to list the steps for your reference:

1. Expand Standard Management | To Do List.
2. Click Connect to the Internet in the right pane.
3. Navigate the wizard to Firewall and then select Enable firewall. In the
next page, make sure the E-mail item is checked in services configuration
page.
4. Click Next and then select Allow access to the following web site
services from the internet.
5. Make sure Outlook via the internet, Remote Web Workspace items are
selected and select any additional services, such as Outlook Web Access,
that you require. click Next.
6. On the Web Server Certificate page, select the Web server certificate
type, and then click Next. You can choose to either install a new Web
server certificate or locate a third-party certificate.
7. The wizard automatically configures Exchange, IIS, and the RPC proxy
registry entries.

I suggest you refer to KB 825763 to get more information about configure
SBS network connection:

825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

And then domain users login their workstations, open the RWW site
(https://FQDN/remote) and Click the link for Outlook via Internet on the
right of the RWW homepage. Follow the instructions to configure the Outlook
client.

II. On the Outlook client, make sure it is Windows XP SP1 with the hotifx
331320 installed (or a later service pack).

Please refer to following KB article:
331320 Outlook 2003 Performs Slowly or Stops Responding When Connected to
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=331320

For more system requirement, please refer to the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/three/ch8/OutC07.htm

III. Only the ports 80 and 443 are necessary, if you use RPC over HTTPS,
which is Microsoft recommended. You need to open these ports on all routers
and firewalls.

IV. Please confirm that the certificate used by HTTPS is using his external
FQDN of SBS Server instead of internal FQDN.

I suggest you read the following online article carefully to verify if the
RPC over HTTPs is set up correctly on your Exchange 2003 Server and the
required ports are opened on the firewall of your network.

Hello:

I have an SBS2003 sp1 premium configuration. Currently, I am working at a
corporate site that requires going through a Cisco 3002 VPN to get
external
access. I have been told the permissions allow for "any" ports, etc
through
this portal.

What I am experiencing is as follows:

my laptop Outlook client is setup to run rpc over http. I can log onto
the
exchange server and "receive" email from the server. I cannot "send" mail
from the outlook client to the server.

Additionally, I can log onto the OWA [server.domain.com/exchange] and
"browse" the OWA interface to view and download mail, but cannot access my
contact list nor "send" mail to it.

I cannot log onto [server.domain.com/remote], I get to the logon screen
ok,
but can't get it to authenticate.

Any hints as to what may be wrong? is it a non public certificate ( using
the sbs2003 generated stuff)?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Robert Dye
