RE: Remote User having trouble accessing OWA through VPN SBS 2003

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi John,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

From the description, I understand the issue to be: you can not access OWA
when you VPN to SBS from a laptop. If I have misunderstood your concerns,
please do not hesitate to let me know.

Please try to add http://servername to the IE Intranet zone of the laptop
and try again. You can do so as following:

1. Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already running).
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Under Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings, click
Trusted sites, and then click Sites.
5. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type http://servername, and
then click Add.
6. Click Close, and then click OK.
7. Try to see if the problem still persists.

After adding the site to trusted sites, also make sure the following
options (in Internet Options | Security | Trusted Sites Custom Level) are
set to either Prompt or Enable:

- Download Unsigned ActiveX Controls
- Initialize And Script ActiveX Controls Not Marked As Safe

Also please check your IE security settings and reset IE related settings
by performing the following steps.

1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
2. On the Security tab, select Internet and click "Default Level" to reset
its security settings.
3. Do the same thing to the other zones.
4. Click the Advanced tab, scroll to the bottom. In the Security section,
click to check the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" check box.
5. On General tab, click Delete Files and Delete Cookies to clear IE cache.
6. Click OK.
7. Click Internet Explorer and reopen it. Then check if this issue
persists.

If it does not work, please help me collect the following information:

1. Get ipconfig/all results of SBS and laptop after VPN being created.
2. What is the detailed error message when you access OWA?
3. Have you added the laptop to the SBS domain?
4. Please compare the IE settings of your old laptop with the new laptop to
see if there is any difference.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Crina Li (MSFT)

| Hello -
|
| I work from the road and I just got a new laptop with XP home, service
pack
| 2. My old laptop was a 2000 Pro machine and on this machine I was able
to
| connect to my company's Small Business server through a VPN. I would
connect
| to the VPN and then open my Internet Explorer and enter in the address
for
| the company main page "http://companypage";. I was able to view the
company
| web site and access my Outlook through Internet Explorer, no problem.
Now I
| can connect to the vpn but I can't access the company internal homepage.
It
| tells me I am unable to view it.
|
| My company runs Small Business Server 2003 and the tech guy tells me that
| they haven't changed anything on the network or to my account. They want
me
| to ship my new laptop to them so they can figure out what is wrong. If I
do
| that I will not have my "stuff" until next week and that can't happen. I
| need my stuff that contains all my customer info, orders, etc...
|
| I asked them if it was an Internet Explorer issue and they said they
didn't
| know. Oh, I forgot one thing. For the longest time, when I would access
| "http://companyname";, it would ask me if I wanted to view some sort of
| certificate. It was annoying so I ended up installing the certificate
and
| the message never came up again. Do I have to do something with that?
|
| Any help is greatly appreciated.
