Hi Trefor,
Thanks for your information.
After reviewed the log file, I find the following error messages:
1758.000: Starting process: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\mofcomp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\cimwin32.mof
1761.469: Return Code = 3
1761.469: DoInstallation:RunInfProcesses for ProcessesToRun Failed
1761.469: Service Pack 1 Setup encountered an error: An error in updating
your system has occurred.
Let us perform the following steps to try to resolve the issue:
1. Run mofcomp.exe manually from cmd prompt to see if it runs. Try
tocompile a MOF file.
the command line is "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\mofcomp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\cimwin32.mof"
Do you get any error when process these files? If so, please try
followsteps. if not, please run the Service Pack installation again.
2. Rebuild the WMI repository. We could use the following steps to rebuild
repository of WMI
a. Disable the Windows Management Instrumentation SERVICE in the services
console (services.msc)
b. Back up the contents in the C:\windows\system32\wbem\Repository\
c. clearing the contents of C:\windows\system32\wbem\Repository\
d. Click Start and click Run
e. In the Run dialog box, please type CMD
f. In the Command prompt, please just copy and paste the command below. Run
it then.
for %1 in (%systemroot%\system32\wbem\*.mof
%systemroot%\system32\wbem\*.mfl) do mofcomp %1
g. Restart the server.
Do you get any error when doing these steps?
if so, please back up the WBEM folder and then copied the contents off from
a good machine and then ran the following steps to re register the WMI Core
binaries:
cd %windir%\system32\wbem
for /f %s in ('dir /b *.dll') do regsvr32 /s %s
wmiprvse /regserver
winmgmt /regserver
If not, please run the Service Pack installation again.
How about the result?
If the issue persists, I suggest that you totally remove the SAV 10.0.2
from the SBS server box and then try to apply the Windows 2003 sp1. And let
me know the result.
I appreciate your time.
Have a nice day!
Sincerely,
Jenny Wu

Hi Jenny
Many thanks for showing that Microsoft does care!
Just to correct your interpretation of my message - the failure occurs at
stage 1. Install Windows 2003 sp1 - NOT install SBS Server sp1.
1. I have attached the zip file as instructed. There is no such file
called KB885918.log so I am unable to attach it.
2. I have disabled the following non-microsoft services before
attempting upgrade:
a. All Symantec services (SAV Groupware services)
b. All APC services (our UPS service)
c. All Backup for windows services (this is our disk to disk backup
utility)
d. The Yosemite Tapeware service (this is our Disk to Tape backup
utility)
e. U Storage Server ( our Flash Disk driver)
f. All other processes are native Microsoft I believe.
I also physically disconnected all network devices and the WAN to the
internet before attempting to upgrade.
The SBS server does not run any other non-microsoft apps.
3. The installation was performed from the hard disk using the
downloaded SP1 files. I have also ordered the CD from Microsoft but was
informed that would take 30 days so we bit the bullet and went for the
download!
Just as an aside, the reason we have gone for the SP1 upgrade now is
because we have a major problem with SAV process RTVScan.exe. After the
SBS server boots up, and within a couple of minutes, RTVScan takes 98% CPU
time and everything grinds to a halt - we can't even run our backups. This
symptom only occurred when we upgraded from SAV 9 to SAV 10.0.2 under the
close direction of Symantec. They have had this problem for a month now
and it is currently escalated to level 2 support, with no real progress.
We, (not Symantec) then discovered that our server was not at the latest
service pack level as we had thought, so Symantec have hid behind the "best
to upgrade this first to see if this fixes their problem". We had hoped
that the sp1 upgrade would go without a hitch and then we could ditch
Symantec and try Sophos for a way forward, but until we get the server
working correctly again, we can't do much at all. Every night we have to
disconnect our server from the outside world (we lose our remote access for
home workers, and lose our e-mails in the process), disable the SAV
processes so that we can get a backup done. In the morning we have to
reverse this procedure and endure a slow server all day long.
You can sense that I am not too pleased with Symantec's efforts to date,
especially as we are on a support contract with them!
Any ideas/ suggestions most welcome.
Trefor Walcroft

Hi Trefor,
Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.
From your description, I understand the issue to be: Windows 2003 sp1failed to apply when you tried to apply the SBS 2003 SP1. If I am off
please don't hesitate to let me knoe.the
To trouble shoot the issue, please kindly help me collect the following
information:
1. Send me the following log files:
C:\Windows\svcpack.log
C:\Windows\KB885918.log
All files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business
Server 2003\Logs
Please compress all files and send to my working mailbox:
v-yanniw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
2. When installing the SBS 2003 SP1, the partner received the following
error after about 1 hour:
"An error in updating your system has occurred. Select OK to undo the
changes that have been made."
He selected OK. The computer took another half an hour to undo the changes.
What you have done and the results:
3. You can try to copy the SP1 setup files to the hard disk, and then try
installing the SP1 installation again. This can let us see clearly where
the installation fails.
I appreciate your time! I am happy to be of assistance to you and look
forward to your reply!
Have a nice day!
Sincerely,
Jenny Wu
