Hello Brian,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to the weekend. Please understand
that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals
to answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

I understand that you cannot run the Backup Wizard on your SBS 2K3 Server.
If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

At this stage, we need to investigate whether reinstall Components are
necessary. In order to supplement your description, I need your help to
gather the following information, please see:

1. Please explain in detail "these have become corrupted on my system". I
have following questions:

a. Just to double confirm, do you mean the SBS Server Backup fails or you
cannot run the Backup Application on Server?

Both. The SBS SErver Backup fails, and I cannot run the Backup Wizard from
the SBS main console in its entirety.

b. In order to have a clearer image of your issue, what exact applications
have been "corrupted" on your Server?

It is odd. I cannot seem to locate anything else unusual on this server
except for the backup operations.

c. Does NTBackup.exe work?

The backup utility accessed throught drive properties -> tools -> backup
seems to work, but alway results in a report that generates errors
afterwards. Everything seems to work until it verifies. Unfortunately, I do
not know where this report is stored to get you more information.

d. Can you run the Windows Small Business Serve Backup Configuration Wizard
(Server Management\Standard Management\Backup)? If no, what exact error you
have encountered? Please type the error message word by word to the
Newsgroup for accurate research.

The backup wizard activated through the Server management screen -> Backup
-> Configure Backup no longer works, although it worked correctly and
successfully for more than a year. The wizard starts correctly, displaying
the initial screen explaining its purpose. Clicking next gives you the
option to change the existing settings or do not use sbs backup. Selecting
change existing and hitting next allows you to select the drive to backup to.
Next allows you to choose what directories to include or exclude. Next
allows you to modify the schedule. Next show you a summary of the settings
you have changed, however, at no point am I able to reserve space for deleted
files, or allow deleted e-mail messages to be retained. Next starts the
Backup Configuration Wizard, which crashes, giving the following message "An
unexpected error occured (80070002). The system cannot find the file
specified." I have tried rerunning the same wizard selecting to not use sbs
backup (instead of changing existing settings), in an attempt to force the
possibility of starting afresh after, and the same error occurs, only now, my
Backup Status Results has been zeroed out on the SBS Backup Administration
Screen.

2. You mentioned "I am not allowed to" "remove or reinstall components" in
the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Setup, I also have following
questions:

a. Did you encounter any error message? If yes, at which step did you
encounter? Please type the full error message word by word the Newsgroup.

When I select Add/Remove Programs (with Show Updates toggled on) -> Windows
Small Business Server 2003 -> Change/Remove, I receive the following message
on a popup "An error occured while trying to remove Windows Small Business
Server 2003. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove
Windows Small Business Server 2003 from the Add or Remove programs list?"

b. What exact Components do you plan to reinstall?

I don't know. I was hoping there might be an option to reinstall the backup
wizards, or to check for corrupted files. Any advice here would be
appreciated.

3. What exact SP1 you have installed? did you follow any instructions to
install SP1? If yes, please list the web link to us so we can know whether
your steps are correct.

Under the Windows Small Business Server 2003 main heading, the following two
subentries appear: Updates for Windows SBS 2003 (KB891193), and Windows
Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1. There are countless other
updates that have been performed on this machine since it was first set up
nearly 2 years ago. All instructions for service packs and updates were
followed explicitly, and I have several other clients using SBS2003,
operating in the same fashion, also administered by me, and none of them have
ever had any sort of similar problem.

4. Did you successfully install SP1? Did you encounter any error during the
installation?

Yes, it was sucessfully installed without any problems.

5. Just to double confirm, does Monitoring and Reporting work on your
Server?

Yes.

Quick additional information. This server is running hardware raid 5. I
have run chkdsk on the disk, and it passes, although I am not certain if the
utility will work on a raid drive. I have also run scan disk. Is it
possible that a disk optimization on a raid drive could somehow corrupt the
drive, causing these files to be misplaced? Mind you, I only ran these
utilities after the problem began. I appreciate all of your help.

Please take your time to gather the information for research. I am looking
forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Is it possible to reinstall or repair the SBS backup application and SBS
wizard? Somehow, these have become corrupted on my system. When I go to
add
or remove programs, and choose Windows Small Business Server to that I can
remove or reinstall components, I am not allowed to. I believe that is a
result of having installed later service packs. The install has been up
and
running flawlessly for two years with all maintenance and updates
performed.
The problems began shortly after the install of SP1.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
