RE: Windows XP Fax Printing

Brandy,

Just wanted to let you know that I had a single machine that was
experiencing the exact same symptoms as were described throughout this post.
I followed your instructions and was able to successfully correct the problem.

Hello Chris,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that three of five Windows XP clients cannot send fax through
SBS Shared Fax Device. If I have misunderstood your issue, please let me
know.

Due to lack of detail error information, I need your help to gather
following information for detail research:

1. You mentioned "trying to start a new fax, the wizard does not appear
when the button is clicked. It appears, for a moment, if something does
want to appear but the Fax Console main screen remains as if nothing has
been clicked." I have following questions:

a. I am sorry that I cannot have a clear ideal whether clients can see
"Welcome to the Send Fax Wizard" or not. Please explain clearly.

b. I strongly suggest that you capture a screen shot so we can have a clear
image for your scenario.

c. On the problematic client workstation, please click Start -> All
programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Fax -> Send a fax. Is there
any error message? If yes, please capture a screen shot for it and send to
my mailbox.

My mailbox is: v-branee@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

2. Can problematic clients receive fax?

3. On the problematic client workstations, run "eventvwr" (without
quotation marks), check whether there is any error. If yes, double click
it, click the Copy button and paste the full content to the Newsgroup.

4. Have you connected any phone line switch to the fax line? What if you
connect the incoming phone line directly to the SBS server?

5. Make sure the Fax service is started in your Windows XP computer. Run
services.msc and find the Fax service and see if it has been started.

Please take your time to perform the steps above and collect the
information for us to troubleshoot your issue. I am looking forward to
hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

I have 5 Dell SX270 machines on a Windows 2003 SBS SP1 domain using the
same group policy. 2 of the 5 Windows XP SP2 Clients can print to the
shared fax printer, no problem. The other 3 have problems

2 of the 3 exhibit the same issue. When in the M/S Fax Console, trying
to start a new fax, the wizard does not appear when the button is
clicked. It appears, for a moment, if something does want to appear but
the Fax Console main screen remains as if nothing has been clicked.
On 1 of the machines, I uninstalled and re-installed the Fax Services
but nothing changed. I tried installing from the \\sbs2003server\client
folder but the set up routine informed me it was for NT workstations. I
tried using the 'publish applications to client computers' option in
SBS2003 all to no avail.

The only off thing about the set up is that I have recently upgraded
from Office 97 to Office 2003 on all machines.

The same symptoms happen even when logged in as an administrator or the
user (non-admin)

Any help, gratefully accepted
