Thanks for replying Brandy.
1. Correct this is the procedure I followed.
2. I did backup the registry keys. I know I can reverse those changes. I
can go back to what I had.
3. a. I have not changed the registry keys
b. I changed the following keys:
HKLM/software/microsoft/fax
HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/services/fax
HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/telephony/country list
HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/telephony/locations
c. Fax service does not work at all means any and all of the following.
1. The system no longer receives faxes
2. The system no longer sends faxes
3. The fax printer icon says "offline"
4. The fax configuration wizard, when launched from the fax
console, says " A connection to the fax server cannot be made"
5. The fax service is not running
6. The fax service displays the following message popup box when
I try to manually start it: "The Fax service on the Local Computer started
and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to
do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.
7. When I try to start the fax service, the event viewer shows no
events on either the application or system logs.
4. I may be using in exact terminology. I believed the fax service
installed with the add/remove windows components control installed the
version of the fax service that comes standard with all Windows 2003 Servers.
The SBS Setup wizard installs a different version that comes only with SBS
Servers. Therefore, I thought I installed the standard version and not the
enhanced SBS version.
5. I am not running either of those two options. We are running a copy of
SBS 2003 Premium that we purchased through our Open License agreement with
Microsoft.
6. Bad terminology again. I didn't uninstall it. Just changed the
registry keys so that the server thought it wasn't installed.
7. No errors, no events of any kind.

Hello Don,.
Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
I am sorry for the delayed response due to the weekend. Please understand
that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals
to answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!
I understand that the Fax Service does not work on your SBS Server. If I
have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.
In order to supplement your description, I need your help to gather the
following information:
1. It seems that you have performed many steps on your Server already. I
have made a summary for it, please see:
a. Try to "uninstall the server version but the Add/Remove Components
wizard".
b. Change Registry keys.
c. Clean Boot.
2. Did you back up your registry keys before you changed them? Please
understand that serious problems might occur if you modify the registry
incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These
problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at
your own risk.
3. I need to know the current issue status, please see:
a. Did you change the registry keys back?
b. What exact registry keys did you modify?
c. Please explain in detail "fax service doesn't work at all". What error
symptom you have encountered? Can you run the Fax Configuration Wizard? Did
you meet any error message? If yes, please type the error message word by
word to the Newsgroup.
4. Please explain in detail "installed the standard server version instead
of the SBS version". What is the "standard server version" and "SBS
version"? We only have SBS 2K3 Standard Edition and Premium Edition.
5. Are you running OEM machine or the 180 day evaluation version of SBS 2K3?
6. Please explain in detail "uninstall the server version but the
Add/Remove Components wizard on my box is broken". How did you "uninstall
the server version"?
7. On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check whether
there are any errors. If yes, double click it, click the Copy button and
paste the full content to the Newsgroup.
Please take your time to gather the information for research. I am looking
forward to hearing from you!
Best regards,
Brandy Nee

Having all sorts of fun with my fax service.
I had it working, but it didnt' give me the option to store to a document
library or email, so research here indicated I probably installed the
standard server version instead of the SBS version.
Tried to uninstall the server version but the Add/Remove Components wizard
on my box is broken. Found another posting with directions on which
registry entries to get rid of (actually added OLD to their names).
Used MSConfig to do a clean boot and tried to install the SBS version.
That installation errored out.
Now fax service doesn't work at all.
I could reverse the registry changes I made to the fax entries and get the
other version working, but I really want to get the SBS version installed.
The error log indicates a lot of LDAP errors when trying to install the
piece, not sure if that is the issue or not. I am willing to post the
relevent error log entries if that will help.
