Re: SBS CALs and MS SQL Server

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Well, I think some of Leonid's comments need a little further clarification

Leonid refers to SBS 2003 R2, a product which is still in the development
and testing phase, therefore any statements seen in the press about what
will or will not be a part of R2 are always conjecture until the product is
released to Manufacturing, which is not going to happen for a while. And
in order to get SQL 2005 for Workgroup Editions included in R2 and covered
by the SBS Cals, you would need to purchase SBS R2 Premium Edition. And
everything must be on ONE SERVER.

The rumor is currently, and its still a rumor, that if you purchase SBS 2003
after March 1st, that you will get the standard 90 day technology guarantee,
that you get the same version of SBS R2 that you purchased, for free. But
you will only get 5 cals with that, so you would have to purchase, upgrade
CALs after SBS 2003 R2 comes out.

But what you haven't indicated was...was your plan to install everything on
the SBS Server, or were you planning a separate server for the SQL Server?
If you are planning a separate server, you would need the Win2k3 Server
license, SQL Server License and SQL Server CALs, BUT, you will not need
separte Win2k3 Cals, basic access to that server is covered under the SBS
Cals

Hope that clarifies things for you

Hi all,

I'm planning to set up a server running on SBS Standard on my company's
LAN. The server will host MS SQL Server 2005 (Express edition) which
will be accessed by 25 concurrent client pcs at the most.

My question is, if the only request to the server by the client pcs is
to query the SQL Server database, do I have to get a CAL for each pc?

Thanks!
