Hello Peter,.
Thank you for posting back!
From your reply, I understand that you want to know whether the Instant
Messaging Service is still available on the SBS 2K3 Server.
Actually the Instant Messaging feature is taken out of Exchange Server
2003. When you do an in-place upgrade from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 or from
Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003, the IM feature included in Exchange 2000
will be removed during the upgrade. If you want to use the IM feature for
your users, you have two options:
1. Install the Microsoft Live Communications Server 2003 (LCS) on the SBS
2003 server. Live Communications Server 2003 is an enterprise real-time
communications server providing an extensible platform to deliver presence
capabilities and instant messaging to connect people, information, and
business processes within a familiar, integrated, user experience, allowing
employees to make better decisions faster. With LCS, LAN users can use MSN
Messenger or Windows Messenger to do IM chat and other tasks.
For more information regarding LCS, please refer to the following pages:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/livecomm/prodinfo/faq.mspx
Microsoft Office Online: Live Communications Server Home Page
http://office.microsoft.com/home/office.aspx?assetid=FX010908711033
2. Use Microsoft .NET Passport service. You can apply a Hotmail or MSN
email account for each LAN user and ask them to use MSN Messenger or
Windows Messenger to do chat or other tasks.
If you have ISA installed on the SBS 2003 server, you should configure it
to support .NET Passport services. See:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/isa/2000/maintain/isaimsec.mspx
I am sorry if this brings you any inconveniences. Please do not hesitate to
let me know if you have any further concerns.
Best regards,
Brandy Nee

In windows sbs 2000 you could setup windows messenger server by adding
lines to your DNS and exchange server so that you could run windowsmessenger
internaly on your domain in Active Directory. In your user profile underwindows
exchange you had the option to enable or disable windows messenging.
messenger 5.1 was the client use to connect. Can this be setup in SBS2003?
if so how as I do not see the same configuration as 2000.
