Re: SBS 2003 Premium + Outlook 2003 BCM

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your update by mail.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

If you want to share BCM database, you can choose install the BCM database
in the server box and there is not MSDE instances installed on client
workstation. It is not recommended that we share the SQL server database.

For further question on the BCM question, I would like to suggest you post
to our Outlook newsgroups. I have provided the link below:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/dgbrowser/en-us/defaul
t.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.outlook.general

The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most
qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the newsgroups
regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction
with us. Also, this is to make sure that the responders can better track
the problem I appreciate your understanding.

Additionally you can take a look at the following articles, hope it useful
to you.

I downloaded the BCM update (v2.0) from the Mircrosoft website and have been
testing it on my home computer (Outlook 2003 Pro). During installation, I
saw is that is installs some sort of SQL Desktop Engine and makes a database
on the user's workstation.

I have a client that I deployed an SBS 2003 premium server to and they
already hand Outlook 2003 Professional installed on their workstations. I
was hoping that I could have their workstations upgraded to the latest BCM
update (v2.0), but have the database stored/utilized on the SBS server
rather than their desktops.

The client doesn't have the need for CRM 3.0 nor the resources to even
consider it. I was hoping to use BCM as a SMB version until they can grow
into using CRM later on.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup.

From your description, I understand that you want to know if BCM can share
database on the SBS server box. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to
let me know.

What is your BCM version? Please note Business Contact Manager version 1.0
is intended as a single user program for small business. The Business
Contact Manager database cannot be shared with other users who are on
different computers. You may ensure you have installed Business Contact
Manager version 2.0 (Business Contact Manager Update) as below:

Business Contact Manager Update for Outlook 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3aec8b42-6dc5-4922
-
9dfb-1c82237d6b62&displaylang=en

You cannot share the Business Contact Manager database in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=831322

For you convenience, I would like to include the following information in
Business Contact Manager Help for your reference. For more detailed
information, you may refer to Business Contact Manager Help.

Allow another user to access your database
-------------------------------
As the database owner, you can allow other users to access your database.
The users whom you select can update records, create new records,
synchronize Business Contacts with their mobile device, and move records
to
the Deleted Items folder. Additionally, they can access all history items,
including e-mail messages, that are attached to records.

Note: For others to access your database, the computer on which the
database is located must be turned on.

To allow others to access your database, you need to share your database
and also grant the new users access your computer, if they do not already
have access.

1. On the Business Tools menu, click Share Database.
2. In the Share Database wizard, on the Share your the Business Contact
Manager for Outlook Database page, select I still want to share my
Business
Contact Manager data with other users.
3. On the Select Users page, in the Users with access to this computer
list, select the check box of the user name to whom you want to grant
access to your database.
4. If the user to whom you want to grant access is not on the Users with
access to this computer list, you can grant them access to your computer.
5. The optional Check computer settings for database access page shows any
settings that need to be changed in order for you to share your database.
(If no settings need to change, the wizard skips this step and proceeds to
the next step.)

Do one of the following:

# Let Business Contact Manager make the changes for you automatically.
# Click Let me review the settings that will be changed to review the
issues for the recommended changes.

6. On the Granting Database Access page, confirm that the list of users is
correct, and then click Finish. If not, click Back to return to previous
pages to make any changes.

Hope the information helps. If there is anything unclear, please feel free
to let me know. I am glad to be of assistance.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

Is it possible to have Outlook 2003 Business Contact Manager's database
be
utilized from the SBS SQL server rather than having to install the SQL
Desktop Engine on each workstation?

Possible but tricky. :-)

I think I posted on this before.
