RE: Help and Support Service - Missing File +=+=+ Long Running Iss

Brandy

I've now had the chance to try these.

Initially I ran the:

%SYSTEMROOT%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries/helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver
/install

command to no effect. I saw svchost appear briefly in Task Manager waited
about 5 mins and restarted the server. The service still will not start and
produces the same error.

I subsequently ran the:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf

command and a pop-up appeared with the message:

Error in setupapi. Missing enry: installhinfsection.

Oh dear. I now have another server with the Help and Support service
missing and this does appear to relate to a few recently released updates. I
tried the first fix on that and it didn't work unfortunately.

Hello David,

Thank you for posting back and keeping us updated!

I have read through the log files you sent, and your SBS SP1 installation
was successful. From the error message description, I think this issue can
be caused if the service is not correct registered. Please refer to the
following steps to correct it.

1. Bring up a command line

2. Run the following command

%SYSTEMROOT%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries/helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver
/install

3. Wait 1-2 minutes. Restart the server.

4. Open services.msc to confirm [Help and Support Service] is installed.

5. Back to Desktop, try press [F1] and see what happened.

If the issues could not be resolved in this way, we may need to reinstall
the PChealth to resolve this issue.

1. Bring up a command line

2. Type the following command

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf

3. The Windows Setup Wizard prompt to insert the installation CD, please
insert the SBS CD 1 and navigate to I386 folder.

4. The installation will be executed automatically.

After you finish all the steps above, please reapply the SBS SP1, and test
the issue again.

Please take your time to perform the steps. If you have any further
questions, please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing
from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Brandy

Many thanks for your response. I’ve posted this email text back to the
discussion thread for the benefit of others.

The helpsvc – ImagePath registry key was incomplete, it read:

%SystemRo

I’ve subsequently edited it, but have not restarted the server yet, and
now
the splash screen appears on clicking Help and Support in the Start Menu
and
clicking on the link in one of the errors
(http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp) produces an incomplete window
(screen caps attached).

I was given the instructions to install the Service Packs by an MS
Professional in the Discussion Groups (attached) for another server. No
errors were produced during the installation process.

Attached are also the logs after the last restart.

This morning I disabled all non-microsoft services again and restarted the
server. I then re-enabled them and again restarted the server. I am
working
remotely and I now can't log back on. The connection goes through the two
warnings - Secure Connection and Certificates then hangs and times out.
I'll
need to drive up there at some point this week and try to find out what's
going on. I just had one of the engineers (customer staff) re-run the
RRAS
wizard to no effect...

When I can get back up there later this week (hopefully as my wife is
beginning labour with our second son!) I'll get the logs off to you.
However
on none of the restarts did the "Access denied error was returned ..."
appear.
