Hi Arthur,
Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.
From the description, I understand the issue to be: you have some laptopusers and when the laptop users are located in the SBS internal network,
they have to install the ISA firewall client to get the RPC/HTTPS work. The
firewall client is not required in another network which has split DNS
deployed. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please do not hesitate to
let me know.
As I know, the RPC/HTTPS traffic is handled by the SBS server through a web
publishing rule. With the ISA firewall client installed, the computer would
then get the ability to the internet. Then the traffic will be processed by
the web publishing rule.
For this situation, you can modify the IE configurations of laptop. When
the client computer is in the internal network, please enable the proxy
settings in 'Connections'\'LAN Settings' window as following:
1. Open IE and then click Tools menu.
2. Click Connections tab and then click LAN Settings.
3. Select Use a proxy server for your LAN and set SBS as the proxy.
When the client computers are not in the internal network, you can
configure IE not to use proxy.
Hope it helps and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| I wanted to check if my understanding of ISA is correct when it comes to
| roaming laptops. I'm sure that this is a common configuration but
wondered
| what others do.
|
| If a user has WiFi at home (or anywhere else) and also want to use WiFi
in
| the office then I install an access point and when configured with RPC
over
| HTTP the user can just turn on and use Outlook without having to worry
about
| the location. I do this by running a split DNS so that the Exchange
server
| can be located with the same FQDN inside and outside of the network. I
| would in this scenario instead of using the SBS firewalls use a single
NIC
| card in the server and put a firewall appliance such as a PIX501 on the
| perimeter.
|
| What if they want to run SBS2003 Premium ?
| In this scenario with two NICs a firewall client is required on the
laptop
| when connected on the LAN but not from home. In this scenario I have used
| Netswitcher but it's a nuisance for the user to have to switch locations.
|
| Is there another way without using third party software to transparently
use
| the Laptop inside or outside of the LAN when there is an ISA server on
the
| SBS server?
