In theory it should be possible to use EFS encryption on the folder in which the backup files are stored on the USB hard drive. But I have not been able to find a soup to nuts guide on how to do that safely. In particular, I presume that the encryption certificate whould belong to the "SYSTEM" and not to the administrator who set up the backup. But I'm baffled when it comes to decryption. Of course, without a way to decrypt the content of the folder after the the system has disappeared there is no point in having a backup. So, the keys and certificates have to be exported and saved securely on some other media. This is where things get really fuzzy.
But with EFS encryption on the folder, every new backup file would get encrypted securely enough that someone who steals the external USB drive would not be able to open it.
Has anyone done this successfully? Is there a good guide for configuration and recovery somewhere?

If using the in-built backup wizard in SBS is there any way to protect the confidentaility of backup data directed to an external USB hard drive (should that drive be stolen) ?
