I know this isn't an SBS question however I am sure plenty of SBSers will
have information that no blackberry support group will have from standard
exchange experience.

I would like to migrate a blackberry system from the main SBS2003 box
(which
is a little strained) onto a new Windows Server 2003 member server.

Can anyone point me in a good place to start and give me an idea of what
SBS
or otherwise pitfalls to look out for?

Shouldn't be too complicated.

This does raise an interesting question - do you want to purchase another
SQL Server license and run this second SQL server on another machine? You
can't simply take your Premium Technologies CD and install another instance
of SQL Server on that member server, at least not until SBS R2 is released.

If you intend to keep using the SBS SQL Server instance but positioning the
other pieces of BES on the member server, I don't think you'll see much of a
reduction in load. In other words, unless you are willing to spend for
another SQL Server license, your only option then becomes MSDE.

This will become irrelevant with the release of SBS 2003 R2 in a few months,
but it is a limitation as of 2/12/2006.

Quote from Microsoft: "Expanded client access license (CAL) rights,
including access to additional Exchange Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005
Workgroup Edition servers in the SBS 2003 R2 network, allowing customers
more flexibility in growth."

1. Backup the BESMgmt database
2. Attach the database to a MSDE instance using your SBS SQL Enterprise
Manager. SQL Server Express 2005 may or may not be supported by RIM.
3. Install BES and point it to the local MSDE instance.
4. Stop the services for BES on SBS
5. Start the services for BES on member server

You can keep the management tool on SBS, if that's your choice, or also
install it on your BES server. In order to install the management tools,
you'd use the Exchange media CD from your SBS package, start the integrated
installer, and install only the tools. Then you would run the Exchange SP1
installer against that ESM to bring it to SP1. As of a couple of weeks ago,
RIM would not support SP2, but that may have changed since then.
