Thanks Steven,.
I was hoping I could use the SBS Wizards for setting up activesync on the
desktop & use the client menu options to automate the certificate
installation, etc. as decribed in the article: Small IT Solution for Mobility
Design page 3 on the SBS 2003 site.
or
I was hoping I could install the SBS certificate by going to the remote web
workplace from the wi-Fi 802.11b connection & accept the certifcate &
highlight the SSL lock & install the certificate that way. Active X
components would we required to be installed. - can you do this in Ie mobile
5.
I want to do both a) & b) as you posted.
Am I forced to do the process manually.
Note: 2 client apps that appear to be required but would require a manual
add-in are activesync 4.1 (SBS comes with V 3.8) & Office 2003 SP2 (Outlook
2003 SP2). If I install these to the client PC would the client menu SBS work.
Thanks

Hi Kevan,
Thanks for posting here.
From your post, I understand that you have the following issues regarding
the Windows Mobile 5.0:
1. You want to know what the mobile device requires the firmware upgrade to
the device.
2. You would like to install the certificate for remote web workplace & use
it as the Activesync certificate but I need to install the active x
component to ie mobile 5. You want to know what steps you need to enable
this so that you can install the certificate.
If I am off-base, please feel free to let me know.
In the meantime, I'd like to answer your detailed questions one by one
inline:
---------------------------------------------
Q1. You want to know what the mobile device requires the firmware upgrade
to the device.
A1: You only need install Windows Mobile 5.0 and feature pack on your
Pocket PC and Smart Phone device. By default, when you using your Pocket
PC/Smart Phone installed Windows Mobile 5.0 to sync with Exchange 2003 SP2
via ActiveSync, only two new features are included, one is photo in contact
and another is Task sync, for other new mobility features included in
Exchange 2003 SP2 such as remote wipe are still not available until MSFP is
built in the mobile phone and you may have to contact your mobile phone
vendor to confirm this.
Q2. You would like to install the certificate for remote web workplace &
use it as the Activesync certificate but I need to install the active x
component to ie mobile 5. You want to know what steps you need to enable
this so that you can install the certificate.
A2. I truly understand the inconvenience you have encountered. However,
based on the current information, I am afraid that I am not entirely clear
about what the problem is. Please provide me with the following more
details about this question:
a.) You want to install the certificate on Windows Mobile 5.0 so that you
can connect to Exchange Server via Activesync?
or
b.) You want to request the certificate via IE on the Windows Mobile 5.0,
but you need to know how to install the Active X component to IE in mobile
device?
Now, I suppose the issue is you want to install the certificate on Windows
Mobile 5.0-based device.
For more information, please refer the following steps:
1. Download and install Regedit.NET 1.0 from below URL:
http://www.pocketgear.com/downloads.asp?product_id=17108&prodname=RegEdit.NE
T%201.0
Note: The third-party product discussed is manufactured by a vendor
independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise,
regarding this product's performance or reliability.
2. You need to use the above third-party tool. And set
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies: KEY 00001017 to 144
3. Copy the certificate file (*.crt) to the Pocket PC.
a. Copy the certificate file(ex: server.domain.com_Enterprise
CA<stuff>.crt) that is on the root of the Certificate Authority server's
c:\ drive onto a machine that has the active sync software on it, and that
the Pocket PC device can establish a partnership with.
b. Connect the Pocket PC device to the machine, and establish a Guest
Partnership.
c. Go into My Computer, on the machine, and open "Mobile Device".
d. Copy the certificate file into this directory, or into a subdirectory of
your choosing (i.e. Business, Personal, Templates, or any folder that you
want to create).
Note: When you try to copy the file over, for the first time, you will get
the following message. Click on the OK button.
Microsoft ActiveSync may need to convert files when synchronizing between
your mobile device and this desktop computer.
Note: A converted file might not contain all information found in the
original file.
4. Install the certificate file.
a. On your Pocket PC device, go into the folder (ex: Program
Files\addrootcert) where you copied the program (addrootcert) to.
b. Go into the Armel directory.
c. Click on the AddRootCert file.
d. Go to File - Open.
e. For the "Folder:" field, choose the folder that you put the certificate
file (.crt) file under.
f. For the "Type:" field, choose the "All Files (*.*)" option.
g. Click on the certificate file(.crt) file that you copied onto the Pocket
PC device.
h. Click on the "Install Certificate" button.
Note: You should get a pop-up that says "Certificate added".
i. Click on the OK button.
Note: You should, now, see the added certificate as a root certificate on
the
Pocket PC device (Start - Settings - System tab - Certificates - Root tab).
If you have the other issue or concerns related to this issue, please let
me know.
I hope the above information helps.
Have a nice day.
Best Regards,
Steven Zhu
