the same issue. This started after the latest service pack updates.

I'm getting Event ID: 1000 in the event log - "Unable to connect to the
database STS_Config on servername\SharePoint.

When I try to start the service I'm told that the service started then
stopped.

I've tried most, if not all of the suggestions here that I could find.
Re-installing SharePoint is not out of the question. What I want to know
is:

- Without listing all the stuff I've tried (I don't have all night) is
there
any one cause of this issue that I could concentrate on?

- If I'm to reinstall what exactly do I reinstall? SQL Server Desktop
Engine
(SharePoint) or
MS Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 or
do I Change/Remove one of the components in Windows Small Business
Server
