Thanks for your suggestions. As you will see from my original post, my
problem stems from the fact that the KB909544 (SP4 for MSDE) update
failed to install correctly, and seems to have corrupted the database
for Sharepoint. See the very last line of my post "Database 'master'
has invalid schema", which is in the log file for the Sharepoint
instance of MSDE.
