yes, as can be seen in this article WD 10K SATA's (you know, those ones I
think of as 'SCSI-like') have a MTBF approximately twice that of the Seagate
Barracuda 7200s mentioned.

A link to peruse. Specifically the last sentence.
I personally have not seen a server system that acts like a dog, whether
sata or scsi.

Hi all,
Just thought I'd throw this one up for comment from anyone who may
know...
Recently been looking at SATA drives as possibles for low-budget
customers and [via our sister company through an entirely unrelated
project] were informed that most SATA drives "are not designed for 24/7
operation" and that in fact the only manufacturer who did have SATA
drives specifically designed/tested as such was Western Digital.
At first, our sister company were *highly* dubious of this but one of
their engineers tells me he investigated this further and found
information to back this up [have requested references on this from him -
once/if I receive I'll post them here]. They also swapped out certain
systems they had installed which were experiencing regular strange issues
with equivalents with Western Digital SATA drives instead - problems
disappeared...
Was really just looking to see if anyone had heard of or come across
anything similar and/or related. If it does turn out to be accurate, we
thought it worthwhile to give a heads up but we're certainly not saying
that this is indeed the case just now [that's why we're asking all of you
wiser heads!]
Cheers,
David
