Sharepoint - "Cannot connect to the configuration database"

We are running SBS 2003 Standard Edition with SP1, and WSUS (Windows
Server Update Services). All was well until the following update
attempted to install, which failed:
Update for SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (SharePoint) on Windows
Server 2003 (KB909544)
I now cannot start the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service - it starts and
immediately stops again. The MSDE log file indicates a invalid schema
for the 'master' database now. This results in the fact that the
default Sharepoint point site is not accessible, but reports the
following error: "Cannot connect to the configuration database. For
tips on troubleshooting this error, search for article 823287 in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com.";
I managed to find the KB909544 update package and attempted to manually
re-install it, but it reports that it is already installed.
It does not seem that the database for KB909544 vesion of MSDE is
compatible with previous versions (refer to the kb article), and the
slq service reports that the 'master' database has an "invalid schema".
I therefore suspect that the database itself has been upgraded, but
the MSDE engine upgrade failed.
