Re: E-trust on SBS2003

I have been using CA eTrust since its conception, one of my favorite, CA does
buid for MS stuf works, BUT.
Here is the big BUT, the latest SMB packaging failed when installed remotely
via RDP. To be more precise the antispyware killed the server, the
installatin did locked up during when it tried to ad the virtual web server
and had to be removed manually from console. It was a pain since the
antypyware part was pegging the CPU to 100% and the it messed up the whole
IIS.
Maybe this is not what you are looking for but if you are considering the
whole CA Suite, as you should since is good to have only one software
manufacturer mess up the server, make sure that you are not taking chances.
I cannot tell you for sure why it did this and i did not care to find out
since it not supposed to happen. The new SMB suite is more of a marketing
approach and it is not designed specifically for SBS. For a price tag of
around $2000 i decided to look for the usual susspects. i took this approach
since I setup many SBS and i cannot take chances, do not really like to
travel much.
Once again I am not slamming the product or the company since I have very
good experience is just not with SBS.
On the bright side one of my customers contact me after I was the one to
setup his SBS 8 years ago and I used CA Suite. System is still up and running
without any management in a very long time and that says alot.

Is the installation of the E-trust onto the SBS 2003 server any different
than the insall on the clients? and it plays well with Exchange? There are
no extra configurations or anything?

Thanks

We use Etrust 7.1 here and it works well but it can be a bear to setup --
the docs and patching procedures are not great. For patches I find that's
it easier just to use their latest "cumulative fix" unless you are having
a specific issue that a patch resolves. See
http://supportconnectw.ca.com/public/antivirus/downloads/nt/7.1/etavwinnt_71.asp
for patches.

The good news is once you've figured out all of this Etrust runs very
well. No issues at all on our SBS2003 server or XP clients (just make sure
you have the XP SP2 patch).

It also has the added benefit of NOT requiring you to pay a subscription
fee every year just to get updated signatures. The support fee is only
for phone support and free upgrades, signatures are always free until they
drop support for the version altogether.
