Re: SBS server blue blank screen - but running.... need to reboot

A hard shutdown - holding power button in for 10 secs did the trick. Rebooted
OK... this time. - Dodge

SuperGumby,
It's exactly as you state... though I tried to issue a reboot command from
Management logged in as administrator on another computer... there was no
option to reboot, something about RPC not running. Perhaps from trying to
resatrt the server prior with server management over RWW.
Man I really dislike "hold power button" downing the server - but right now,
I don't see any other options - if any knows a trick of two to address this
issue - please advise.
Thanks very much - Dodge

I have seen the same behaviour on SBS2003 twice. In both cases solid servers
which were updated to current and then a couple of months ago displayed the
symptom you are seeing shortly after some updates were applied. It's
basically the Windows desktop with no icons or start bar, yet all else about
the server appears OK.

In one case I was able to log onto a workstation as admin and use computer
management to shutdown the SBS, not so the 2nd, forced shutdown (hold power
button) was required. In both cases further updates were waiting for install
(controlled from WSUS). The boxes were rebooted cleanly a couple of times
and the waiting updates applied (the only reason it was noticed was because
I was onsite to allow updates). The symptoms have not returned in the now
several weeks since. I am unable to explain exactly what happened, beyond
this tale.

Last week, or so, I've also seen this on an SBS2000, but it has been
experiencing other problems (I think I solved it today, RAID controller is
stuffed). In this case the server was rebooted, got to ctrl-alt-del to
logon, logged on, pale blue background (not BSOD). So I TS'd to it (admin
mode), same, login OK, pale blue. Again, no info in logs. Power button
required.

SO, I can't shed much light on why you're getting the symptoms but barring
other alternatives I suggest power down and cross your fingers.

Hi all, have a puzzler... SBS 2003 Prem SP1, all patches, updates... on an
HP
ML 330 G3. Found server with a light to med-blue blank screen.
Crtrl-Alt-Delete does nothing. Thought it might be monitor - but monitor
works elsewhere. Though it might be keyboard - but changing keyboard made
no
difference and keyboard lights up. Though it might be video... though I
can
move the mouse cursor on the blank blue screen. So I thought I would be
smart, accessing the server through RWW remote web workplace and logging
into
the server from there. Everything looked fine, no log errors, no odd
processes running - so let's try to reboot from RWW - did and the server
did
not reboot. Now, I cannot connect to the server again through RWW
connection.
Any suggestions? I'm down to manually downing the server via the power
button and really don't want to do this if I have an alternative.
Has anyone run into this situation before?
Thanks in advance -- Dodge
