There is software to manage fonts so they do not have to be loaded every
time.
Other than that, there should be no less than 2GB of RAM... I would specify
4GB RAM, speed irrelevant and /3GB /USERVA:3030 setting in boot.ini. If you
want this to be even faster, RAID0 stripe for the pagefile and application
temporary storage location (the only time I tolerate a RAID0 is for
temporary rendering, which is what your requirement is).
SATA 10K RPM drives should be sufficient, although since you only need high
performance for temporary files, you may want some small 15K RPM SCSI
drives, as they are quite cheap in smaller capacities.
I would try investing in a fonts management software first, then RAM, and
only after that the extra disks.
For screaming performance, 64-bit dual-code opterons on XP 64-bit. :-)
