I agree that it would be practically impossible that MS would
release a patch that would drop the Administrator from accessing the
machine locally as I'm sure many an administrator only uses the machine
locally and would thus be really screwed up by such a patch. I did say
that I didn't think it was an MS patch also. But I think you could also
agree that Microsoft has released patches that have cause problems for
people before - and serious ones at that, where unitended results
occured.
The idea that the patch issue was the main point seems a bit off.
They lost access to the server - that's the main point, they only asked
if a patch was a possible reason why. Quote "the network is broken and
WE NEED ACCESS TO THE SERVER. We plugged in the keyboard and monitor
and try logging in locally - AND CAN'T!!! It says the local policy
prohibits interactive local login. We are using the administrator
account that was used to install SBS in the first place! We even tried
using the server name instead of the domain name. All to no avail!" All
to no avail... in other words - can't gain access to the server
remotely or locally. My thought would be since they usually do remote
admin stuff that they may have enough sense to connect a machine
directly to the server nic if it were working. If network didn't imply
the servers nic, then they only needed to repair the non-server part of
the network and they would have had remote access back anyway.
Well, I don't want to cause/continue an arguement. I guess if you
were looking at it from a standpoint of the 'network' was broke and not
the servers connection to it, I could see how you would still consider
the idea of a remote connection still being available. I assumed
they'de be a bit more on top of the problem than that considering they
are remotely admining a server in a commercial network (that you
assumed was configured in a multi-location WAN). You would think they'd
have considered something as simple as connecting through a local LAN
vs. only from an offsite WAN location, especially if they already made
the effort to physically relocate to the site to login in locally
anyway.
