I would assume they can't log in remotely as they said the network
broke and they therefore had to try to to login onto the server
directly. I take it that there is a problem with the network adaptor of
the server, thus no remote administration.
I don't have a solution to the problem, but if they didn't
specifically set a policy to restrict the administrator account from
local login the question of 'did a patch or update cause this' makes
sense to ask in my opinion as well. I believe Microsoft has been making
changes in patches/update for a while now that are tring to tighten
security. I wouldn't think Microsoft would lock the local administrator
account out of logging in locally, but still, if 'rg' didn't do it, its
not such a rediculous question to ask.
Is there any possibility of booting with the SBS cd, going into a
recovery command prompt, and running any kind of registry editing
utililty that could be used to change this restriction? Or, some other
'dos' utility that would allow the administrator to change the policy
without having to actually log into Windows? Or, heaven forbit, a
non-Microsoft tool that may be able to do this - like some kind of
Linux style boot cd with a tool to change the policy? There are many
other Linux utilities like this that can do Microsoft undoable things.
Like I said, I haven't done this or tried it, but there must be some
way of getting this policy changed without having to rebuild the
server. Anyway, good luck 'rg'.
