RE: what causes this error

Hi,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup!

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

Technically speaking, the value "SMTP Server Remote Queue Length" indicates
the number of messages in the SMTP queue for remote delivery. By default,
the value set in Exchange 2K3 is 30. If you receive the alert, that means
the average value for Remote Queue Length in 10 mins is greater than 30
which means the number of emails waiting to be delivered in the "Remote
Delivery" queue is above 30.

Do you receive this alert all the time? When did you receive this alert for
the first time? How's the email traffic on your SBS network? Are there any
mail flow issues? Have you configured the Internet access and e-mail by
using the CEICW? Are you using DNS or a smarthost to deliver outbound
e-mail?

If your clients do send many e-mails, it is a normal behavior and you can
change the thread in Server Management \ Monitoring and Reporting \ Change
Alert Notification \ Performance Counters. You can Edit the entry "SMTP
Server Remote Queue Length" and replace the default threshold with the
average for that system (plus some padding, generally, we can use the
130%~140% average value as the threshold.)

If the users on your network do not send e-mails as many as the number
indicated in the alert, I would suggest that you check the contents of the
queued e-mails:

1) Open up ESM (Exchange System Manager), and then expand Servers \ Server
name \ Queues.
2) In the right pane, double-click the queue which has stuck e-mails, and
then click Find Now.
3) Double-click the items listed in Search Results to bring up Message
Properties, what's displayed in Sender column?

Under a normal situation, the Sender column should show only your own SMTP
domain. If there are many e-mails from other Internet domains, your
Exchange server may be relaying e-mails. Refer to the following Knowledge
Base article for the information about blocking SMTP open relay:

324958 HOW TO: Block Open SMTP Relaying and Clean Up Exchange Server SMTP
Queues on SBS
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=324958

If there are many e-mails are From postmaster@yourdomain or "<>" To
Internet recipients, it is likely some kind of NDR attack. Refer to the
following Knowledge Base article for solution:

886208 Exchange queues fill with many non-delivery reports from the
postmaster account in Small Business Server 2003

Another suggestion:
=================
These messages can get created by a virus infection as well. Please see
the two following links for more information.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.mytob.s@xxxxxxx

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sober.k@xxxxxxx

If yes, please scan the whole server box and clean up the queue to see if
the issue be fixed.

Hope above information helps! I am happy to be of assistance to you and
look forward to your reply!

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu
