VPN/Nortel Networks Grief e mail sending grief with attachments via wifi

When I am connected to our VPN via my WAN though I can receive Lotus e
mails with attachments fine, if I try to send one with attachment I get
Lotus time out errors; remove the attachment [even small one of less
than 50kb] and it'll process normally.
I've quizzed Linksys who's Router I use {wag54g] but were no help, or
Equant who provide our VPN access.
If I get to somewhere where I can plug in lan cable into my laptop,
there's no problem, so one assumes its something in the Router that's
issue.
I occasionally do have times, despite no changed settings my end, where
I can send attachments.
Equally if I use webmail, and create e mail with attachment, again it
won't work whilst WAN connected to VPN tunnel.
Disconnect and webmail send of attachments fine.
In all cases I can receive attachments.
I can see nothing in Linksys Wireless settings that may be causing and
any advice valued.
