Re: Problem with CEICW, DHCP and Virtual PC

If you install VPC and then an OS in that VPC, the OS will see your network.
If there is a DHCP server anywhere on your network, then the VPC instance of
SBS will be able to detect it, and it will kill its own DHCP server. It is
the same as having the OS on your physical network in my experience.

I use VPC instances of XP Pro on my laptop to join them to my clients'
domains for management (I don't like to leave tools behind for the clients
to see) and not mess up my own laptop.

If your router has an IP of 192.168.0.1, then you need to kill its DHCP
while running SBS in VPC.

"the DSL box uses the same IP Address as the NIC" is wrong, since no two
items on the same network can have the same IP address. Your DSL "modem" is
either a bridge or a router. Typically, if it is a bridge, it will give
access to the DSL provider's network and their network will have a DHCP
server that gives a dynamic IP to whatever you connect to the bridge. That
is very insecure, since your connection is live. What you should have is
Internet > DSL modem > router/firewall > computers. You **may** have
Internet > DSL router/firewall > computers already, if the ISP gave you a
router to connect to their network instead of a bridge. You can tell by
ipconfig if your IP address is private or not. If your computer connects to
your "DSL box" and has a private IP address, then your "DSL box" is a
probably a router.

"If you use the NIC and a Router, you have a IP Address for the NIC and the
Router will have an IP Address which will be different. " That is correct.
The NIC is on the SBS WAN port and connects to your actual router. You set
the SBS LAN NIC to have a different IP subnet, just as you would in a real
network.

"So I have to manual set the IP Address that CEICW will use. How do I do
that?" For the two SBS NICs, do it in the NICs' properties pages. Match the
WAN subnet to your router (assuming you have one, which you should) and set
the LAN subnet to whatever you want your test network to use, as long as it
is different from the WAN subnet.
