Re: Cannot browse or open shared printers or server on sbs 2003 from client pc

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your update.
As I know, the network printer is deployed to client computer though logon
script. So the printer should be installed when the user log on to domain
after the network printer is installed. Also because accessing a printer
and a shared folder use the same mechanism so the issues should be the
same. Would you please taking some time to help me collect some information
for troubleshooting?
1. Does \\servername work on the server console?
2. Are all the LAN clients having the same issue?
3. If we disable the antivirus services does the issue occur?
4. Get ipconfig /all outputs from both SBS and problematic client computers.
5. Can the server access a client's share \\clientname?
6. Can the clients access the shared folders on themselves? For example,
from clientA try to access clientB \\clientB.
7. Use nslookup utility to check the DNS record:
1) On the client workstation, open a command prompt.
2) Type ''nslookup'' (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.
3) Input the server name and then press Enter. Does it return an internal
IP address?
Also please make sure that your printer is compatible with Windows Server
2003, please check the HCL list:

|
| hi
|
| and thanks for the advice
|
|
| i think the network problem has taken a different turn.
|
| the initial symptom of the problem was printing freezing at workstations.
|
| at the same workstations, I cannot open up the server at \\servername
|
| almost as if the system is waiting or cannot communicate.
|
| meanwhile if i access the mapped drives to the server which we setup in
the
| login script, those are fine.
|
| internet surfing is fine also.
|
| my thought now is what is the update mechanism for the printers from the
| server.
|
| if i create a new shared netwrk printer from the server, how long should
it
| be before the printer shows up on the users printers folders?
|
| the only other thing that may be trouble is that my techs had shared
about
| 10 locally attached printers in the last few months.
|
| those printers were listed on everyone's printer folder. Is there a
possible
| problem with the number of concurent connections to a workstation that
would
| cause excess traffic etc as everyone is trying to communicate with
everyone
| elses printer?
|
| I am in the process of 'unchecking' the option to list in the active
| directory.
|
| for machines that cannot print, i have had to go into the registry and
| delete the printers from there.
|
| I am sure i am having either some type of comunications problem maybe in
the
| network itself....yet internet works.
|
| any ideas?
|
| tx
