Hello Fingerstofists,
Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.
According to your description, I understand that after login to SBS 2003
Server Domain, you received "Times out" when you try to ping Default
Gateway. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let
me know.
First, I would like to thank for your pre-troubleshooting process and
information to isolate this issue.
Considering the current condition, please let me know the following
information so that we can understand your situation more clearly.
1. How many NIC is installed on the SBS Server (Two NICs or One NIC)?
2. Please kindly describe your current network topology by referring to
the following format:
Internet <-> Cable modem <-> Router <-> (Internal NIC) SBS Server (External
NIC) <-> Clients
3. Please kindly refer to the following information to double-check these
network settings:
One NIC on the SBS Server
=================
On SBS server:
NIC:
IP: Fixed IP
Gateway: your ISP or your Hardware router IP
DNS: SBS NIC IP as the only entry
In the DNS console (dnsmgmt.msc), right click your ServerName and click
properties. In the Forwarders tab, your ISP DNS server IP should be
inputted there.
On workstation:
IP: Assigned by DHCP
Gateway: your ISP or your Hardware router IP
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry
Two NICs on the SBS Server
==================
On SBS Server
External NIC (Network Connection)
IP address: 192.168.0.2 (Assigned by Router DHCP)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: your ISP or your Hardware router IP
DNS: 192.168.2.1 (SBS internal NIC IP as the only entry)
Internal NIC (Server Local Area Connection)
IP address: 192.168.2.1 (Fixed IP) different network subnet with external
NIC's IP
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: Blank
DNS: 192.168.2.1 (SBS internal NIC IP as the only entry)
In the DNS console (dnsmgmt.msc), right click your ServerName and click
properties. In the Forwarders tab, your ISP DNS server IP should be
inputted there.
On workstation:
IP: 192.168.2.x Assigned by SBS Server DHCP
Gateway: 192.168.2.1 Assigned by SBS Server DHCP
DNS: 192.168.2.1 (SBS internal NIC IP as the only entry)

4. If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect the following
information:
1) Please run "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotation
marks) on the command prompt on the SBS Server and one of workstations, and
then send these output files to my working mailbox: v-natliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I appreciate your time and cooperation. If anything is unclear, please feel
free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Have a nice day!
Best regards,
Nathan Liu (MSFT)
