RE: Fax Modem only works 80% on incoming.

Hello Pat,

Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.

According to your description, I understand that the new Fax modem can not
accept all incoming faxes. It answers and disconnects with a 'Bad Line' or
"Poor line' error. However 80% of the faxes you get in no problem. If I
have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research and experience, I think this issue could be hardware
conflict or phone line related issue. I will try to help you troubleshoot
this one and narrow down the problem. But, if we can prove the issue to
hardware, you may need more troubleshoot from your hardware vendor. Thanks
for your understanding.

In order to isolate this issue, please kindly answer and perform the
following questions and steps:

1. First of all, please kindly let me know the exact model of the U.S.
Robotics Corporation V92 Fax Modem, so we can make sure the problematic Fax
modem in the Microsoft HCL and there is no compatible issue.

Check the problematic US Robotics modem compatibility link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/default.aspx?subID=22&xslt=c
ategoryProduct&pgn=0461b1b0-db2a-4ffe-ae79-a8e169ec547c

2. Does this issue occur when we are using this Fax modem sending
outgoing faxes? If this issue only occurs with certain incoming faxes, and
it answers and disconnects with a "Bad Line" or "Poor Line" error, this
issue is most related to faxes sender side and quality of the communication
Fax Line.

3. Please kindly monitor this issue, and check if there are some common
things on faxes sender side or Fax Line. Would you please send me one or
two sample problematic incoming faxes? You could directly save it from
inbox and send it to me at v-natliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

4. Can we get the FAX log?

i. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server
2003\Logs\xxx-Fax.LOG
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server
2003\Logs\xxx- faxcfg.LOG

ii. Open Fax Console Properties page, in the Activity logging, please
check log incoming fax activity. Receive the incoming fax and
send me the log. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax\ActivityLog

iii. PSS log

All session log settings are located in the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fax\Device Providers
\{2172FD8F-11F6-11D3-90BF-006094EB630B} and can be modified as follows.

LoggingEnabled (REG_DWORD). Please choose 1
0 - No log.
1 - Log all sessions, successful and failed. If you enable this option,
consider increasing default value for the maximum number of
log files stored.
2 - Log only failed sessions. This is the default selection.

LoggingFolderIncoming (REG_EXPAND_SZ)
%windir%\system32\LogFiles\Fax\Incoming - This is the default location of
incoming session logs folder.

Note: Please kindly send these log files to my working mailbox:
v-natliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

5. To avoid any potential issue, is it possible to use a different MS
certificated modem for testing purposes? Thanks for your understanding.

If you have any questions or concerns related to this issue, please let me
know.

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Nathan Liu (MSFT)
