Hello Dan,
Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
I understand that you got error message when you trying to add the second
NIC on SBS 2K3 Server. If I have misunderstood your issue, please let me
now.
Due to lack of detail information, I need your help to gather following
information for research. So please take your time to read through my reply
and then perform the steps. Thanks a lot for your co-operation!
1. The most important information we need to know is: what is your current
Network Topology? For example:
{Internet} {DSL} {NIC1} {SBS2K3} {NIC2} {ZyXel router} {Internal Clients}
2. Just to double confirm, I need to know where you put the ZyXel router
now.
3. What is your SBS 2K3 Server Edition, Standard or Premium? Do you have
ISA Server installed? If yes, is it ISA 2K or ISA 2K4?
4. Please explain in detail "I get an error message concerning the
firewall". We need to know:
a. Which step did you meet the error message? So we can reproduce the issue
on my side.
b. What is the exact error message? Please type the error message word by
word to the Newsgroup.
5.
==============
For your information:
a. Generally speaking, if we add the second NIC on the SBS box, it is
recommended that configure this NIC as the external NIC, and run the
Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard (CEICW) afterwards.
825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763
If you configure the second NIC as the internal NIC, please run the Change
Server IP address Wizard (Server Management\Standard Management\Internet
and E-mail) and then CEICW.
b. It is recommended that we add a router between the SBS Server and the
DSL modem, and let the router assign a static IP address on the SBS
external NIC. For example, the Network Topology:
{Internet} {DSL} {Router} {NIC1} {SBS2K3} {NIC2} {Internal Clients}
Please make sure the IP addresses on the SBS external and the internal NICs
must be in the different subnet. For more detail information, please see:
How to configure the server for Internet access
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=185
c. If you want to connect the SBS box directly to the DSL modem, we can
simply run the CEICW Wizard. Please refer to the KB article 825763 above to
re-run the CEICW Wizard, which will help us automatically configure the
network settings.
d. I also found following KB articles for you to configure Internet Access
on SBS Server.

with Two Network Adapters
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=306802
309652 How to Configure SBS for Internet Access by Using Modem or Dial-up
Connection

Please take your time to read through all the information. If you have any
updates, please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing
from you!
Best regards,
Brandy Nee
