Re: Windows Update 2003 SP 1 KB909988 (relating to SharePoint Services

Please help!

I also am running SBS 2003 SP1 and I keep getting pestered to install
KBKB909988. I have tried installing it through Windows Update and via
the system tray applet that tortures me that I have pending updates to
install.

So far, it has installed 14 times.

I opened a case with Microsoft but so far they have been useless. I
have sent in the windows update.log and the kb909988.log file. But they
refuse to email me or call me back. I have sent several emails to the
email alias I was directed to. I dont know if their service is ALWAYS
bad, or Im just unlucky around Christmas.

The worst insult is that I am an ex-Microsoft engineer. As such, I am
very sensitive to customer support issues. I routinely had to respond
to technical support escalations within 2 hours, so this kind of lack
of attention is very disappointing.

Anyway, I have googled this and have seen several other customers with
the same issue. I think this patch is broken.

I went through a lot of trouble to check all the pertinent registry
keys, I ran an SFC to see if I had any corrupted or backlevel dlls, I
verified BITS was healthy and I ran the spuninst.exe to uninstall the
patch and then tried to reinstall it.

Lastly, I wanted to comment on another bizarre related issue.

KB909988 is downloadable from WindowsUpdate, but you cannot get it from
the administrative area of Windows Update. Thus I cant manually download
it and then manually install it.

Frankly, Im not sure what stinks worse..Microsoft's support or this
patch.
