Hi, we are using SBS 2003 SP1. We have had VPN setup and running perfectly for about a year. However, recently, it has stopped working.
Anytime a user tries to connect via VPN he gets to the stage where it says verifying username and password, but then gets the message "windows was unable to connect to the network using the username and password you provided. Please re-enter the username and password". The username and password entered is 100% correct. It eventually goes into an "Error 734: The PPP link control was terminated."
This problem has just recently started happening and is happening to all remote users. The router has not changed since it was working fine. I have even deleted and reconfigured the RAS. All traffic is going through 1 NIC.
It sounds as if the GRE channel (protocol 47) isn't getting through, but the control channel (TCP 1723) is.
If you are absolutely certain that nothing at your end has changed (no updates or service packs, no wizards re-run) then you should probably suspect your ISP. Ask if they have blocked any ports or protocols recently.
Do your local or remote routers offer any logging facilities? That might make it easier to know what is getting where. .
