Re: KB885918 (SBS 2003 SP1) horror story

What Charles is talking about is there is some special Open mange gunk that needs to be installed ahead of time.

www.smallbizserver.net click on service packs and read the SBS sp1 links and make sure that Dell Open mange is on the right one and the bios is up to date.

Dell support doesn't have a clue and unfortunately you are a ping pong right now.....hang in there.

1. Check your Open manage version
2. Check that the Dell is on the latest Bios
3. Email me the SRX email number please.

Hi Charles, Susan....

As Per usual I have inherited this network as is...Yes I would admit that if I had a few hiccups along the way I would be happy but this is terrible..

My Suiteinfo.dll file does not have any resource tab, so I opened it with notepad and verified an OEM in there...I also replaced the suitefinfo with the original Dell disks and I reinstalled the SBS components....none of these work..
I have phoned Dell and they claim they don't have any special Service Pack...So I am sort of left dead in the water.....
Will keep you updated.....

Elvis...don't buy an OEM. That is your real issue here.... there are just some wacko things with that image and I wish either Dell would fix them or that MS would put more pressure on Dell to fix their image.

And what's the SRX number you opened the case with as "they didn't know either' is either the sign of a bad support call, or this hasn't been followed though.

You don't use a "1, 2 or 3" it's hex numbers.

I hate an OEM server flat out period. SBS rocks when it's not that icky OEM install.

Hi,

Over the last 10 years I have not had a good experience with SBS Server....since Windows NT4.0 SBS Server
I have a PE 800 from Dell with OEM SBS 2003 Premium edition...
I am trying to install the SP1...so I have followed the instructions from this site and started the service packs install,

W2K3 SP1 >>installed successfully
Sharepoint SP1>>installed successfully
E2K3 SP2>>>installed successfully
XP SP deployment>>installed Successfully
SBS 2003 SP1 (KB885918) >>This is the error message "This computer cannot be upgraded to the OEM version of Windows Small Business Server."

I have changed "isrunfromweb to 0,1,2" doesn't help.
Reinstalled the SBS 2003 components including exchange....didn't help
replaced suiteinfo.dll didn't work
I have since opened a case with M$ and they don't know either....

So after all these problems...how can anyone say that SBS is a money saver...the only trouble in my 10 years experience over 3 continents and MCSE NT4.0/2000/2003 has occured with SBS!!!. Not even after a 10 000 user nework with 300 servers migration from NT4.0>>>W2K3 did I have this amount of trouble....This is my first ever support call to Microsoft in 10 years!!!!

My 2 cents worth of advise....if you are some person that cannot afford technical support or an IT guy, install SBS 2003....its idiot proof, and never touch the Server again until you need to replace it...

I am pretty sure that M$ is going to recommend a reinstall....I can see where this is going....and when I do reinstall....I am going to install Regular W2K3..considering I am technical this is the correct verison I should be install.....
WOW After 10 years and being a Microsoft FAN!!! SBS is still the same piece of *** it was 10 years ago...sorry to upset those that love it but thats my opinion....I am going to stick with the technical stuff..Regular W2K3!!
All help from this website is greatly appreciated and I am just venting my frsutration....
Thanks
