RE: Can't install Outlook 2003 upgrade on client

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your kind update.

Based on my research, this issue is most likely caused by some of the
registry keys for Office being corrupted or missing. To resolve the issue,
we need to use Windows Installer Cleanup utility to completely remove
Office to resolve the issue. I would like to let you know that if the steps
below do not work, we may need to try some Windows troubleshooting steps to
check if your Windows system is working fine. If your Windows system is not
working fine, we may have to format your hard disk and reinstall your
Windows system to resolve the issue. However, please rest assured that we
will try our best to work with you and find every possible method. Please
work with me by trying the troubleshooting steps and we will resolve this
problem together. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.

To do this, follow the steps below:

Note: Removing and reinstalling Office program doesn't remove Office
document or Outlook data. However, for more assurance, please refer to the
following Microsoft
Knowledge Base (KB) articles to learn more about backing up the Outlook
data and Office program settings.

Please note that this article is also for Outlook XP

1. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. After you install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, click Start
menu-> All Programs-> Windows Install Clean Up.

3. Highlight Microsoft Office XP entry in the list and then click Remove.
Quit the Utility.

4. Rename the "Microsoft Office" folder as "Office Old" which is located in
the C:\Program Files.

5. Click Start menu-> Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box and press Enter.

6. Locate the two registry keys below and click Delete from the Edit menu.
Click OK on the pop-up warning dialog box.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0

7. Click Start menu-> Run, type "%Temp%" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box and press Enter.

8. Empty the %Temp% folder. [Note: If you are unable to empty temp folder,
please come into Windows safe mode to empty the temp folder: restart
computer and keep
pressing F8 to come into Windows safe mode.

9. Empty the Recycle Bin.

10. Restart your computer and then try to install the Outlook 2003.

If the issue still exists, let's try to perform the following steps to
repair Office XP and then uninstall it:

Repair Office 2002
=====================================
1. Open one of the Office 2002 programs, and select "Detect and Repair" on
the Help menu;

2. In the "Detect and Repair" dialog box, click Start;

3. Insert the Office 2002 installation CD if prompted. Restart your
computer after the repair process is complete.

I appreciate your time and cooperation. Please do not hesitate to let me
know if you have any further concerns, I am looking forward to hearing from
you.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Nathan Liu (MSFT)
