On the subject of UPS hardware:
Pat Coleman: spend the bucks and get APC. Figure out your server's rated
wattage and double it. Get that size unit.
I am installing an APC Smart UPS 1500 acquired after discovering a smaller
unit was unequal to the load (650 W). Good news is the unit sustains the
Dell PowerEdge 1800 server, running Win2k3, for 30-plus minutes.
Two glitches: The previous unit's monitoring software, UPSMON.exe, is still
attempetd to load as a service on startup. It fails and exits. Error is
noted in event log. I ran the software's "uninstall" , but the service is
still listed in the services pane. How to remove it?
Second: the APC Business Edition Basic PowerChute software does not shut
down the server after the specified time. I installed the agent and console.
Services lists both as up and running. The PowerChute console shows the
server as a device. I configured the shutdown sequence to run the command
file "default.cmd", which I edited to include some 'net stop xx' commands,
and these run when the file is invoked via the CLI.
However, the PowerChute Console Risk Assessment report shows a problem with
Application Shutdown, specifically, that the server, address x.x.x.x, is "Not
Available".
I checked with APC and they asked me to try to address the Agent directly
via x.x.x.x:3052. I got a "Page Not Found" error on attempting this with
IE6. They then suggested I needed to obtain and install J2RE from Sun. I
did this, but it didn't make a difference.
It feels to me like a permissions issue, but that's just a guess. I know
there's a built-in in Win2k3, but MGT wants to use PowerChute. Any
suggestions?
