external sbs connection drops w/o warning

I have a sbs 2003 server that is using nat to distribute access to
several clients. For some reason, the external nic keeps going down. It
doesn't disable, or loose link, it just stops sending and receiving
packets. I have had this problem with every card that I have used. If I
connect a computer directly to the modem, it will not drop the line,
ever, and it seems to be a sbs 2003 issue. If I put sbs 2000 on it, it
will work fine.
Does anyone have any ideas?
