I have had ocassion to restore off backup to different hardware. It is not
easy, especially if you are using a disk controller that is different to the
one in the original machine. Windows does seem to cope with most other
differences in hardware but not the disk controller. Having said that I have
had to restore onto a machine with a different controller. Naturally it
BSODed with messages about not being able to find a boot device.
I was then able to use the original SBS CDs to reinstall the OS over the top
including the new disk controller drivers. This is the option where the OS
install states that it has found an existing install of Windows and would
you like to repair it. Once the install concluded the machine would boot.
You then go to safe mode and sort out any other driver issues. Then update
your patches again re-run the wizards. There will be other odd issues but a
good trawl of the event log, this NG, and www.eventid.net usually resolves
these over a week or so.
It doesn't always work so be warned. A practice onto another PC with a
different disk controller before disaster strikes is well worth the effort
to familiarise yourself with the process.
Having a second DC in the network definitely helps. If your main server is
trashed you can do a swing migration (www.sbsmigration.com) to recover and
the hardware issues go away. The second DC may not help you if it is at the
same site as the main DC and the site burns down or something equally as
disastrous. Consider having the second DC offsite at another branch or even
someone's home using a VPN tunnel to replicate DC data back and forth. I use
such a technique for a customer of mine with the main office in eastern
Australia and a branch office in western Australia.
Good luck
