Yo. Folks?

I'm a Open value customer.

I do not get a web site with downloads. I get sent media.

Now maybe the rules in Fresno versus the rest of the USA are different but I think not.

Leonid,

Thanks for your reply. Something you may not be aware of, or if you
come from Russia, you well may - the price of MS software in Thailand,
is way, way higher than in the US and this is not due to duties. I
suspect the same situation exists in most of the 3rd and developing
world. For Example, SBS Premium with 5 CALS promotion is at Royal
Discount for around US$400. Everything here is strictly retail price.
The same software here is $1,300. As far as I am concerned, this is
ripoff and totally unfair. This software should be cheaper here, not
more expensive. This is one of the primary reasons that software
piracy will never be eliminated in Asia. Who is going to pay, who can
afford to pay, a month's salary for XP Pro or 3 months salary for
Office Pro?

I've been around and around with Synnex regarding OLP on other
products. Maybe I have a mental block on OLP, or maybe just stupid but
I do have an MCP in Windows Server so I think I have got at least a
rudimentary grasp of licensing.

I tried to buy XP OLP and they told me I would need an upgradeable OS
installed first. What is upgradeable, well nothing! So I would
effectively have to buy *two* versions of Xp. One OEM or retail, then
another OLP! Don't believe it? - I will send you a copy of the email.
Anyway,SBS is still too expensive from them.

With regards to upgrade-only licensing of XP through volume channels that is true, as I was talking to Microsoft licensing, it turns out that the most cost-effective way for me to go is to sell a corporate customer a PC with XP Home OEM (or even Windows 98 retail/OEM whatever) and then sell them a what's called SBE CAL SKU under Microsoft Open Value license. That covers XP Pro/Vista Enterprise, Office 2003 SBE/Office 12 SBE, SBS CAL/(and probably) Cougar CAL.

That said, however, XP is actually an exception in the volume license process. The rest of the software acquired through the volume process is _not_ an upgrade. In other words, you can acquire SBS 2003 Std through Open Value and install it on bare hardware. The MSRP on SBS Standard with Software Assurance (T72-00882) is $915 or $305/year through Microsoft Open Value.

Downloadable media is as I understand it is a benefit of Open Value, not Open Business (where fulfillment is through eOpen). For Open Value, the customer gets access to the standard MVLS site (similar to Select and Enterprise), not eOpen.

So since you are a Synnex customer, find someone there who knows how licensing works and order a $25 media kit if you have to. You shouldn't have to import the software. Media kits are typically available at local warehouses.

Just to be sure, I went ahead and contacted Microsoft volume licensing for you (anonymously).

Here is the paraphrased response:
Software exported from US is licensed under US terms that may not be valid in Thailand. The customer should acquire the software locally. There are subtle but important differences between the terms of US and Thailand. Contact Volume licensing for Thailand for more information.

I have a confirmation from Microsoft that though it was not possible to download the media through eOpen, it is in fact possible to download licensed media through Open Value at the MVLS site. This is confirmed for US only.
