Thanks for the links, Brandy! I appreciate your response. I have been to
all those sites and read the information, except for the Windows Powered NAS
stuff. That was good. Thanks. The rest of the info is more detailed and I
am not in that stage of implementation, yet. I'm in the planning stage and
would like an overview of how to structure my network. You mentioned life
cycle. Well, that's why I'm planning an upgrade. Two of the four servers
will be out of warranty next year (4th qtr); the other two are older. The
switches and hubs are old, 100 Mbps devices. The room where they're located
is dirty and hot. I'm wanting to create a plan of attack to transition from
this to the optimal setup. Defining the optimal setup is where I am
struggling. Some have advised splitting up SBS to individual components,
each on its own server. I don't have that kind of money. That would be
overkill, too. SBS works well for us in the sense that many software
products (anti-virus, backup, etc) have an SBS version which is MUCH more
reasonable to license. I also wear several other 'hats' around here, so
managing multiple servers is not my idea of 'the KISS principle'. :^)
Basically, I have about 25-30 users using email and the internet.
Additionally, users store their data on network drives. The accounting
stuff is on another computer running a Progress database.I figure SBS will
handle the email and internet stuff. I'm not using SQL Server right now,
so I may just get the Standard Edition of SBS. I want to use the SharePoint
stuff in SBS2K3, so should I get the Premium edition to get the Front Page
software? If I get a NAS device for the file storage, do I need another
server to control it? When I visited the Windows Powered NAS link you
provided, I watched the flash demo on that page. The third slide shows what
I think I want. :^)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/storage/fileserverconsolidation/presentations/WP_NAS_deployment_scenarios.html
But all this stuff - the whole design - has to work together when I'm
finished. Being a mile wide and an inch deep in knowledge, I'm afraid I'll
make the wrong choices.
Thanks,
Keith
