Hello Joe,

Thank you for posting back!

Technically speaking, if the tape drives are not fully compatible with
Windows 2K/2K3, NTBackup may not be able to support Autoloader drive and
you will need to use some 3rd party software such as 'Backup Exec' if the
tape manufacturer does not plan to make an upgraded driver for their
devices.

Please go to Windows Server Catalog below to check whether the tape you are
currently using works compatible with Windows 2K/2K3:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/

All removable-media devices are handled by Removable Storage Manager (RSM).
Unless the tape device or other removable-media device is recognized by
RSM, Windows 2K/2K3 programs (such as Backup and Remote Storage Server)
cannot use the device properly.

For RSM to recognize a removable-media device, the device driver for that
device must use the Windows 2K/2K3 driver extensions. If the device is not
on HCL for Windows 2000/2K3, please contact the device's manufacturer for
updated drivers that include the required Windows 2K/2K3 extensions to work
properly with Removable Storage Manager.

The reason why that some third-party backup solutions can use the
Autoloader feature provided by the tape drive (which is not compatible with
Windows) is that they install their own drivers for the tape library which
may not be RSM-aware. The third-party backup solution will function without
RSM, but the tape drive may still not function completely due to the
incompatible driver.

Since NTbackup does not recognize your tape drive, I suggest that you
contact the tape drive vendor to see whether there is any update or ask for
more dedicate support.

Thanks a lot for your time!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee
