Hello Keith,
Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.
I understand that you want to set up a new SBS 2K3 Server and reconfigure
your Network. Please take your time to read my suggestions and information
below:
1> In your post, you mentioned "Another server is an old Dell box with
WinNT Server, perhaps with an old SBS". Please understand that ONE Windows
Small Business Server Per Domain. There cab only be one Windows Small
Business Server in the Windows Small Business Server domain, and you cannot
establish any type of trust between the Small Business Server domain and
any other domain.
2> To upgrade SBS 2K Server, please see:
Since you are running SBS 2K Server, you can choose to either upgrade the
server or complete a migration to a new server:

Just a kindly reminder, we DO NOT support Windows NT which has ended the
support lifecycles any more. Please see:

3> I understand that you do not plan to use tape to store Backup.
Based on my experience, I have seen some issues that the backup runner of
SBS 2k3 have compatible problem with network storage device. Regarding this
issue, I suggest you make sure that the NAS device is in the Windows 2003
hardware compatible list. You could check the HCL list in the following
links
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx
SBS Backup does not support backing up to mapped drives. The recommended
way to do this would be to backup to a UNC path. However, when backing up
to UNC path, the share must be part of the SBS domain with the correct
permissions. I know some of the NAS devices let you enter the domain name
or the workgroup name when you are configuring them. But even if you can
join it to the domain you have to ensure that the file system on the NAS
device allows you to store large backup files and allows you to set the
correct permissions so that backup can write to the device.
