Hi,

Welcome to SBS newsgroup.

Issue description:
=============

I understand that you want to know if your plan about migrate the SBS 2003
to a Windows 2003 with an Exchange server 2003 installed with Transition
packs is correct.

Analyzing and suggestion:
==============

Generally speaking, your plan is better to be implemented, make sure that
you have backup all the Exchange and AD database, before you are doing the
migration. Here I would like to offer you some additional information; it
might be helpful to you:

1) Perform a full backup of the SBS 2003.
2) Install Windows Server 2003 on a new machine.
3) Install Exchange Server 2003 (Organization name must be same).

4) Determine whether the mail quota for Exchange needs updating:

A. On the source server, click Start, and then click Small Business Server
Administrator Console.
B. Double-click YourExchangeOrganization, double-click Servers,
double-click YourServer, double-click YourStorageGroup, right-click Mailbox
Store, and then click Properties.
C. Click the Limits tab.
D. Review the settings for Issue warning at (KB) and Prohibit send and
receive at (KB). If the quotas are set to something other than 175,000 KB
for the warning and 200,000 KB for the limit for sending and receiving
e-mail, continue to the next step and update the Exchange mail quota
settings on the destination server.
E. On the destination server, click Start, and then click Server Management.
F. Double-click Advanced Management, double-click YourExchangeOrganization,
double-click Servers, double-click YourServer, double-click
YourStorageGroup, right-click Mailbox Store, and then click Properties.
G. On the Limits tab, update the settings for Issue warning at (KB) and
Prohibit send and receive at (KB).Move Exchange mailboxes
5) Move Exchange mailboxes

A. On the destination server, click Start, point to All programs, point to
Microsoft Exchange, point to Deployment, and then click Migration Wizard.
B. In the Exchange Migration Wizard, configure your server.:

To migrate mail for this account, from a client computer, use Outlook to
export the mail to a .pst file and then later import it. You must also
export any mailbox rules for the Administrator account. For more
information about exporting to a .pst file or exporting mailbox rules, see
Outlook Help on the client computer.
If you are migrating the mailbox for an account, the account must have been
migrated to the server using the User Account Migration Wizard described
earlier in this document.Container for New Windows Account Browse to
YourDomain\MyBusiness\Users\SBSUsers.

C. Follow the instructions to complete the Exchange Migration Wizard. For
licensing questions, you can call 1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday
through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a
Microsoft licensing specialist.

Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing
Sites http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/index/worldwide.asp to find
contact information in their locations.

Hope the additional information also helpful to your issue; please feel
free to post back the results. I am glad to be of assistance.

Best regards,

Charles Yang (MSFT)

|
| Hi! My company is moving from SBS 2003 Premium to the following
| standard version servers:
| Server1: Win 2003 Std (domain controller and file server) - new machine
| Server2: Win 2003 Std with SQL Std w/ 2 Processor Licenses - new
| machine
| Server3: Win 2003 Std with Exchange 2003 - to be installed on old SBS
| machine
| Server4: Win 2003 Std with ISA 2004 - new machine (We didn't use ISA on
| the old SBS, but plan to use it just as a front end for Exchange and
| SharePoint later on for off-site employees to use.)
|
| I split up the work in such a way that I focus on one server per
| weekend. Here's a summary of what's been done. SBS 2003 Transition Pack
| has been applied on the old machine. SQL has been moved to a new
| machine. All databases are fully functional. The new domain controller
| has already been promoted and all FSMO's transferred. All shared drives
| have already been moved as well. DNS, DHCP, WINS, GC have all been
| moved to the new domain controller. The old SBS machine has been
| demoted.
|
| My problem is with weekend #3 where I need to reformat the old SBS
| machine to have a clean install of Win 2003 Std with Exchange 2003.
| Here's my tentative plan. Please let me know if there's a better way to
| do this:
|
| (1) Run Exmerge to export mailboxes to .pst files.
| (2) Backup public folders using Outlook.
| (3) Backup Exchange databases.
| (4) Remove Exchange attributes from users in Active Directory.
| (5) Uninstall Exchange from machine.
| (6) Remove Exchange from Active Directory using "setup.exe /removeorg".
| (7) Reformat old SBS and install Win 2003 Std with SP1 and patches.
| (8) Install Exchange 2003, SP2, etc.
| (9) Create mailboxes in System Manager.
| (10) Import mailbox data from .pst
| (11) Recreate public folder store.
| (12) Restore public folder data from Outlook backup.
| (13) Create Exchange attributes for users in Active Directory.
| (14) Make sure all mailboxes match the correct users.
|
| Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
