RE: 2003 disc configuration

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Comcast,

Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup!

For your description, I understand that you want to get some information
about disk size and RAID configuration for SBS 2003 installation. If I am
off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Actually, we do not have an official document that describes this. However,
I would like to provide the following suggestions based on my experience:

1. Windows Small Business Server 2003 installation requires a minimum
partition size of 6 GB. If server availability is a critical factor in your
business, consider using RAID to provide fault tolerance for your data. The
most two value types of RAID to your business are RAID 1 and RAID 5.

2. We should put the data that is very important and needs to be read/write
very often on the RAID5. So, we should put the information store, user
folders and file shares on the raid 5 array.

3. If you would like to provide fault tolerance for the OS, we can install
SBS 2003 on the mirror drive.

4. Put other less important files on the single drive.

5. Make a backup plan for backing up the files on ALL drives. Although
RAID5 and Mirror can provide the data redundancy, a good backup plan is
always the best way to protect your data and avoid the data loss

Please note usually is recommended installing everything on the C drive
during the SBS 2003 Integrated Setup and then moving some of the data such
as Exchange Database Files to the other drive. We have a white paper
discussing moving data in SBS 2003, you can take a look at the following
URL for reference:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=A1D0AF69-1287-4225-
BD8B-59C89F44984B&displaylang=en

For SQL and ISA, you can choose to store the database files and cache
folder in another driver during the installation.

I would like to provide you some articles regarding to the topic:
