RE: SMTP sending failure, connection is dropped by remote host

HI,

Thanks for detailed updates.

You can return and gather the information I need as your convenient time,
thanks again for your effort.

In order to clarify the issue more clearly, we need to gather some
information:

1. Please gather the SMTP log as I referred last time.
2. Could you tell us which method you use to send internet emails via DNS
or smarthost?

If you use DNS, could you use smarthost on the ISP as a test to see if the
issue still exists, you can enter the smarthost on the ISP via CEICW,
please contacts with your ISP about detailed information on how to
configure smarthost on SBS 2003?

If you use smarthost to send internet emails, could you use DNS to send
internet emails to see if the problem still exists or not, you can use
CEICW to choose to send emails via DNS. (Please note that you may need to
have a MX records on the ISP side or have public FQDN name on internet for
your SBS.

3. If possible, could you enable the message tracking on your Exchange 2003
and then send the internet emails via outlook or OWA to some external email
domain to reproduce the issue then check the message tracking central to
see if the emails is sent out from SBS 2003 or not? You can check it also
on the outbound queue to see if there are any email stuck in the queue.
Please refer to the KB article below to enable message tracking:

246856 How to enable message tracking in Exchange 2000 Server and in
Exchange
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246856

4. Does the issue occur on all external email domain, could you test if you
send to some other external domain for example hotmail yahoo or gmail does
the issue still exists or not?
5. Please also recreate SMTP connectors for an external domain which you
encounter problem in sending emails so that we can bypass DNS to test if
the issue is relate to DNS issue. You can refer to the article below to
recreate SMTP connector to bypass DNS for a special remote domain.

285863 How to Bypass DNS Name Resolution to Test SMTP Mail Flow to Remote

I really appreciate your effort on this issue, please feel free to post
back your results. I will be here waiting for your updates.

Best regards,

Charles Yang (MSFT)

| | Hi Charles,
| | Re your sugestions:
| | Authentication - none required by isp as they host our domain and have
| | direct feed to our server to recieve external mail - which as you say
is
| | working correctly - hence port 25 is listening for incomming - not so?
| | Port 25 is what we are using, there is no doubt, listening on all
| unassigned
| | IP addresses.
| | I can telnet from an external network into port 25 and run a session.
| | Email is set correctly.
| | Internet is browsing correctly.
| | smtpdiag.exe runs without errors.
| | I have rerun the wizzard so many times, and have done this before many
| times.
| | Cerificate is correct fqdn.
| | Email is awaiting the send in the smtp default virtual server with the
| fqdn
| | of the isp's smtp server listed. All queues show green tick EXCEPT smtp
| | virtual server which is green for some seconds upon boot - sends some
| mail
| | then it drops, the green tick goes away and the virtual server sits
with
| mail
| | in its' queue.
| | Stopping & starting does nothing. (including stoping starting IIS, SA,
| etc.
| | etc.).
| | To do any further testing means a journey to client site, halting their
| | email and internet access, connecting new server and run tests. Hence I
| would
| | like to go in to run many tests not piecemeal as this will take months.
| | I need a good lead on where the problem might be.
| | I have some logs files if you would care to see them, but cannot post
| these
| | to an open site (here), can send to you own email only due to security
| | considerations.
| | I am very grateful for your considerations and feedback.
| | I can see no configuration error, and feel that there is a possibility
| that
| | it maybe a registry error caused by the interaction the sbs build
| wizzards
| | and the vendor's server installation wizzard.
| | I have not seen anything like this before.
| | Thanks & regards
| | Peter
