Hi,
Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup!
For your description, I understand that you have some questions to SBS
client workstations. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Please see my answer in the following:
Q1. After connecting the workstations to the network, first
configuringSBS2003 and then using the //servername/connectcomputer to
finish thetask, some of the workstations have a list of users displayed in
All Programs. If you select one of the usernames in All Programs you get
two submenus Desktop and Username Documents (which has a submenu
MyPictures). All the submenus are empty.
What steps should I take to remove these folders from each workstation?
When one user logon to one computer, system will detect the user permission
and load appropriate user profile to it. All user profile saved in local
computer locates in C:\Documents and Settings\username folder. And so
different users will have different interfaces for they have different user
profiles.
For you now scenario, please check the following settings to see if we can
find root cause:
1. Please check the content under C:\Documents and
Settings\useraccount\Start Menu\Programs, what you find? Can you find some
folders named other user account? Please kindly catch a screen shot when
you open the folder C:\Documents and Settings\useraccount\Start
Menu\Programs.
*Note: please change "useraccount" to the problematic user account.
If you find some folders named other user accounts under folder of
C:\Documents and Settings\useraccount\Start Menu\Programs, you can delete
them safely.
And also please help me catch screen shots when you open the following
folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
To make a screen shot:
A. Press Alt + Pr Scrn to capture a screen shot.
B. From Start, go to Run, enter pbrush in the Open box, and then click OK.
C. Use Ctrl + V to paste the screen shot to the canvas.
D. From the File menu, go to Save and save as a JPG file.
2. Does the issue happen on all user accounts on these workstations?
Q2. When all the workstations attempt to synchronise on log off, a listof
files (matching the MS exculsion list) is displayed with the
message;"Unable to make filename.ext available offline" etc.
And then the log off waits for "Ok" to be pressed before continuing. This
is a pain when shutting down or restarting a workstation.
The interesting thing here is the files all belong to one user but
whenother users try and log off and hence synchronise they see these
fileslisted too in their synchronisation failed message. What I would like
to do is remove this users files from everyone elses list, and alsoprevent
the failed synchronisation from stopping a log off, restart or shutdown.
A: After you enabled offline files of some shared folders on the server
box, the synchronizing process will be launched between computers rather
than users. However If some user account enabled Roaming profile, Documents
Redirection, the synchronizing process is launched to the user account.
What the type of offline files you enabled? Can you find these offline
files on the server box?
You can check the offline files settings as follows:
a. Open Windows Explorer, click Tools menu and choose Synchronize¡ item to
view all offline files that enabled on the client workstation.
b. Please click Setup.. button to configure offline files's Synchronize
settings.
c. If you don't want to synchronize when logon or logoff, you can uncheck
checkbox of When I log on to my computer, When I log off my computer. And
also you can configure synchronize settings under On Idle tab and Scheduled
tab.
To trouble shoot your synchronizing issue, please try to do the following
test to isolate the issue:
I. Restart Offline cache
========================
1. In Folder Options, on the Offline Files tab, press CTRL+SHIFT, and then
click Delete Files. The following message appears:
The Offline Files cache on the local computer will be re-initialized. Any
changes that have not been synchronized with computers on the network will
be lost. Any files or folders made available offline will no longer be
available offline. A computer restart is required.
Do you wish to re-initialize the cache?
2. Click Yes two times to restart the computer.
II. Ensure those offline files available on the appropriate location and
Re-enabled them "Available Offline".
To make shared network files or folders available when you are offline:
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. Click My Network Places.
3. Double-click the network place that contains the folder or file that you
want to make available offline.
4. Right-click the file or folder that you want, and then click Make
Available Offline. The Offline Files Wizard starts. Click Next to continue.
5. Select the Automatically synchronize the Offline Files when I log on and
log off my computer check box, and then click Next.
6. Select the Create a shortcut to the Offline Files folder on my desktop
check box, and then click Finish. The files are copied to your computer,
and a "Shortcut to Offline Files" folder is displayed on the desktop.
*NOTE: When you make other files available offline, they are displayed in
the "Shortcut to Offline Files" folder.
III. Re- configure those offline files on client workstations.
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the Offline Files tab.
4. Select the Enable Offline Files check box, and then click OK.
And then test to see if the issue be fixed.
