Hi Morris,
Thanks for using the SBS newsgroup! Also thanks for Mariette's input.
For your description, I understand that you have some concern about the
difference of MSDE and SQL. If I am off base, please don't hesitate to let
me know.
As Mariette said, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) has
limitation of Database size of 2GB and concurrent connection of 25 users.
It is the free, redistributable version of SQL Server that is ideal for
client applications that require an embedded database.
You can refer to the following link to get detail inforation:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/default.asp
In SBS 2003 environment, after you setup SBS 2003 server box successfully,
WMSDE has been installed for your databases. It has not storage limits and
is fine in a small-scale environment, when you are hosting just a few Web
sites. But if your server suddenly gets popular and you need to start
hosting hundreds of sites, you may run into performance and storage
problems.
Some of the WMSDE Limitations as follows.
1)Cannot use WMSDE for web farm setup.
2)WMSDE overcomes limitations that MSDE has (like 2gb size limit, number
of simultaneous connections).. However you can't use it for anything else,
because you can only use it for a specified signed schema (WSS Schema).
3) No Full Text search.
4)The instance of WMSDE installed can be used only by WSS.
To get full text search, you can upgrade the instance SHAREPOINT from WMSDE
to SQL to get full text search function of Sharepoint services.
You can follow the instructions are outlined in Premiuminstallsteps.htm on
the root of the Premium CD to upgrade the instance SHAREPOINT to SQL and it
is no need to manually migrate data from MSDE to SQL server and all dada is
kept.
Before you do the upgrade process, I suggest you backup your Companyweb
data firstly in case any unexpected things happen. You can refer to the
following KB article to backup:

Business Server 2003

And also you can refer to the following KB article to get detail
information to upgrade the instance of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine
(Windows) (WMSDE) that is used for Windows SharePoint Services,

Small Business Server 2003-based computer

on the issue please feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to your
reply!
Have a nice day!

Jenny Wu
