Crina,
Please see the answers to your questions and requested files;
1. Is there any third-party software (anti-virus, server management or
other application service) installed on the SBS 2003 server? The most
possible cause of this issue is that you have installed some application or
third-party software that has VSS function which will conflict with
built-in VSS function of SBS 2k3 server. So I suggest you check if you
install any software just before the issue occurred, especially the
following software
IBM's Tivoli TSM
Computer Associates Unicenter
More information:
888035 Quarantined virus files are skipped and your backup reports a failed
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=888035
We have Symantec AV v.9.0 Multi-Tieer Protection for 10 users (running on
SBS 2003 Standard edition with 10 clients). But this software was installed
almost a year ago. So I would not think this could be the reason for backup
failure.
2. Log on the server as Administrator. Open Server Management console,
navigate to 'Backup' snap-in. In the right-panel, click 'Backup Now' link.
Will this problem be reproduced?
I have done that today. The log files for "Backup now" today are
attached.Backup04.zip (This was the "Backup Now" today) and Backup.03.zip
(This was the scheduled backup last night) for NTBackups. And sbs backup,
they are as follows; sbsbackuplog3.log (scheduled backup last night) and
sbsbackuplog4.log (today "backup now" log file).
The problem can not be reproduced as SBS does not put up a
Failed/Successful backup status for "Backup Now" on the Server Management
console. But there is a new backup.bkf file on the External USB2 drive.
3. What's the brand and model of the backup device? If you configure the
backup wizard to back up the system to local drive, will this problem also
occur?
We are using 200 GB external Maxtor OneTouch II USB2 Disk drive. This is
considered/seen as local drive by the server.
4. Please gather the latest NTbackup and SBS Backuprunner logs, compress
them to a ZIP file, and then send it to me for analysis at
v-crinal@xxxxxxxxxxxxx:
Please see the attached files.
1) The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and
Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data'.
These files are attached (backup03.zip- last nights scheduled backup- and
backup04.zip today "Backup Now" log files)
2) The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the
folder C:\program files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Support\Backup Logs.
These files are attached. They are sbsbackuplog3.log - last nights
scheduled backup and
sbsbackuplog4.log - today's "Backup Now" log file.
Many Thanks for your help and look forward to hearing from you shortly.
Best regards,
Crina Li (MSFT)

| Crina,
|
| The exchange problem is resolved since installing the SBS SP1. But the
| backup problem still drags on. I had tried backing up to a local drive
with
| the same end result/errors.
|
| On top of this we have just started to experience the same backup problem
on
| another SBS 2003 Premium Edition last night.
|
| Any help would be greatly appreciated.
|
| Thanks
